egdw's Journal, 29 Mar 14

I'm almost through reading the book Wheat Belly and I'm coming to believe that wheat is EVIL, including all it's by products. Holy schmoly!! Just think how healthy we'd all be if we had never eaten wheat! We'd all live to 100+ and be doing marathons. Just think how great we'd all look.

Seriously though, I can't believe the weight loss for myself since I've gone off the "white stuff" for the "one-der land Easter/lLent" Challenge. There are probably other health benefits too besides loss of visceral fat that I simply don't appreciate as of yet. I've included sugar and white rice in the mix, but even so, I really am impressed. For Just even a few days, when I broke the challenge, my weight went up again rather quickly. I'm not entirely sure if the weight loss is due to avoiding wheat in combination with sugar and other grains, but it seems to be working. So with this in mind, I will persevere until Easter at least and then decide if I will continue at least in some modified fashion.

I ordered the Tanita BC533 scale yesterday through Amazon for hubby's upcoming birthday. I know he'll really like it because he's always working out and training and monitoring his weight. I can't wait to try it out.

On a very happy note, I heard that the temperatures are going above freezing today. Time to celebrate spring around the corner. I'm tempted to go shopping for new spring clothes in a smaller size, but I think I'll wait until I'm a smaller size! Lol.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I'd enjoy a debate on the evils of wheat if anyone out there is interested!

You will love the Tanita. You can program information for a few users, so it's a good gift for you too (LOL). I touched on the evils of wheat in one of your other journals. I think wheat belly is a bit extreme, but 99% I agree with. Having said that, I've not read the whole book, only the cook book. I would love to try the Shiritake noodles instead of pasta, let me know if you do. Everytime I go shopping I forget to look for them. I grew up on a farm and remember before the gmo grain and before the pesticides and before the growth hormones and antibiotics in the animals. The landscape that I grew up in no longer exists. All of the wild flowers are gone, it's sad. The other debate to have is all of the growth hormones in beef and chicken. It really is a good idea to search out organic food (my opinion). My husband came home the other day and mentioned that Superstore carries an 18 pack of eggs from Steinbach. You would think that would be good - I don't know. I suspect they feed their chickens the way most farmers do so just because it is local doesn't necessarily mean it's better. I'm so happy for you - it seems you have found what works for you. I'm pretty happy with my own success so far - just gotta keep going... Have a great day!

My Aunts and Uncles were all farmers in eastern part of our province. I remember having that 4th meal in the day as a kid when at 10:00 they had another full course meal. Great memories. They have all sold their farms now and retired into town. They ate well, worked hard and weren't overweight at all, yet a number of them have become diabetic over the years. There is a very strong history of diabetics on my immediate and extended family so I need to be mindful of the triggers. I agree with you that wheat belly is a bit extreme but it does make one give pause to the notion of carbohydrates. I looked up the glycemic index of a few foods yesterday as I was reading and sure enough, bread was one of the highest foods out there, higher in fact than sugar itself which I found amazing. You're doing great. I better get going as I plan to hit the gym this. Or ing. Have a great day, get out and enjoy the temperatures.

I read the book wheat bellies also, and I do agree that wheat is not the greatest food to put into our bodies. However saying this, I found for me that when I try to restrict all forms of wheat, I would be really good for sometime and then go nuts on it so now I do everything in moderation and do not restrict any food groups. I do try however not to have anymore than four servings of carbs a day, we all need to find that balance with our diet and just keep on trucking. I was out with friends last night, had a great wheat free meal and wine, need to let lose everynow and then.
