Kenna Morton's Journal, 20 Jan 21

My sister has been singing the praise of a brand of chili called STAGG— she likes the flavor called Laredo with beans and jalapeños. The best ever from someone who doesn’t cook. Most of that stuff has way more sodium in it than I want to eat, but I finally agreed to split a can with her. I had to check the label— I thought it looked just like dog food. The taste was just OK as long as you can get by looking into a bowl of dog food. I almost immediately felt the effects of the sodium. I ate it but couldn’t help wonder if the dog food would have been a better choice. Did you know that all pet food has to be edible by humans because so many poor people do eat it. I think I will just stick to my own WOE.

Maybe true at some point in the past, but most pet food today is not actually classified human grade, as the FDA strictly defines that in a way that very few pet food brands can comply with. https://talkspetfood.aafco.org/humangrade

I hope someone tells the poor people who still eat it that it is now not for human consumption.

I used to be a dialysis nurse so back in the day we kept a salt shaker at the patients chair side so that if the fluid we were pulling off dropped their BP we would have them lick a little salt and their pressure would almost instantly jump 10-15 points. Imagine that effect with someone who is already hypertensive.. two major causes of patients requiring dialysis is hypertension and diabetes. Here in Southern California there is a dialysis center on every block, much like gas stations. Minimal exaggeration here.

my oldest girl has a tendency towards pancreatitis and can only eat super low fat quality food. so it's whole grain beef from honest kitchen which is 8.5% fat. I'm not gonna lie, she eats better than I do because it gets mixed with rice daily to lower the fat further and the dehydrated food looks and smells delicious.

Kenna, my great aunt that died a month ago was on home dialysis for 10 years. The life she had dealing with that is very sad. I bet you were the best nurse. 💕 That’s crazy about the salt! 😯

Wifey9707– thank you. I was a great nurse and I loved every single minute of it. Very lucky since I went off to live in Los Angeles and go to nursing school when I was just shy of my 17 BD. Blessed beyond words.
