Full calorie small soda, saltines and graham crackers for ‘breakfast’ after surgery (they won’t let me leave without eating and drinking it), Cracker Barrel for lunch (half the meal), Arby’s for dinner and snickers just now to make sure the meds stay down tonight. Still going to be right where I should be calorie wise since I burned a lot of calories going to the pharmacy and Walmart this evening. Today was horrible. OR nurse filled with drama over nobody having me sign a new consent form and her having to hand me the stupid paper. Guess yesterday’s form wasn’t good enough.

They didn’t update hubby as they said they would, (even downloaded the app they wanted me to download so they could text him at every step and all they sent him was that I was in recovery then called an hour later to say I’d be down in half an hour then took an hour to get me down there when I was supposed to be headed down 30 minutes after the recovery text) surgery took 90-105 minutes instead if 30 and the one nurse who could tell me why insisted she had to leave for lunch. Oh and they had to send me to two recoveries which is why I’m assuming it took longer-another reason I have questions. Why would I need to go to recovery 2 after recovery 1 unless there was a major problem?? When they sent him that text they are usually prepping me to leave.

They finally found my clothes and purse then set them down blocking me in on the bed. Had to lift everything up and over my head to sit it in the chair 18-24 inches away which I’m not supposed to do. But after 20 minutes I realized nobody was going to come help me move it. Got changed and waited some more. Finally headed to the curtain planning to just walk out and the nurse caught me and made me wait on a wheelchair.

After the nurse left who was concerned about her lunch I asked the new nurse some questions and she couldn’t answer anything. Said the other nurse was the ONLY one who had spoken to my surgical team. My options were to wait on her to get back and her to have time to talk to me or talk to my drs office. Turns out the medical assistant in the office doesn’t get information for at least 3-5 days because the hospital has decided dictating reports and sending them on shouldn’t be done quickly. My dr works with kids tomorrow so I don’t want to bother him.

When we were almost home blood started running down my tummy. Seems I’d bled through the bandage. Medical assistant said it’s fairly common and recommended ABD bandages and to tape them on. By the time I could go get them and get home I had bleed through a folded up paper towel I’d taped over the bandage but had stopped bleeding. I guess it to be maybe 1/2-1 cup of blood I lost so not bad. I’d already soaked through 5 folded Kleenex (all I had in the truck.

They didn’t put me in a bra this time. Asked what to do with the drain bulb and was told I’d have to just hold it the 2.5 hour drive home and while eating lunch and going to the pharmacy. Said umm no I won’t be. That requires my hand up my shirt the entire time or raising my shirt up. Long story short they found me a safety pin that I’d asked for. Pinned it to my shirt but that drug the neckline over and exposed the missing breast unless I held the shirt in the correct position. Luckily I had a bag of shirts in the truck so changed at a gas station and pinned the bulb in there. Was heavy and pulled but better than nothing.

All in all the day sucked lol. I got the nausea patch thankfully but they must’ve went light on the pain meds and no sedative because I didn’t have the loopy feeling and I didn’t come out relaxed. The meds they gave me are similar to one I’m allergic to. Thankfully the pharmacist told me to be very careful with it as I could have the same reactions. Plus when taken with the antibiotics I’m on it can cause severe depressing symptoms one of which is ceasing to breathe. Kinda need to breathe so I won’t be touching those meds. Wouldn’t even after I found out about the tummy issues and possible hives and hot flushes. She said the tummy issues are so bad they gave me anti nausea meds even though I already have the patch. The whole day was screwy. I mean come on, the go spy had my allergy list so why would they insist on the pain meds then give me one I’ll probably be allergic too as well? The lunch nurse flat out told me to take it up with the pharmacy if I didn’t want lain meds. (Pharmacy fills it and contacts me constantly when I don’t want it reminding me the hospital said I needed it. So I just took them but won’t use them. Lunch nurse was more worried about getting her way, me to stop asking questions so she could go to lunch. Grr. I will refuse to be placed with that nurse again. I’ve already sent a request to my dr to use the surgery center for my upcoming surgeries because I don’t feel comfortable going back tot hat hospital. Blowing my veins, being behind schedule so that they rush and cause more pain was enough to not want to go back but today was the last straw for me. I have tons of respect for nurses but this lady should consider a different career. Most of the nurses in that place should and you would expect better from OU medical!

Oh no... I was waiting for an update and this was about as bad as it gets. I am so dreadfully sorry. When you are so vulnerable, that is the time you need people you can trust and who are completely capable. You have enough stress and trouble to deal with without a surgery "recovery" being so horrible. Do absolutely "bother" your doctor. It doesnt matter if busy. You deserve some answers and consideration. I wish I could make things better for you... That this would all go away. Just... Let people help you... Ask for help and don't try to be too strong. God be with you. ❤️

Peeper- that sounds about as terrible as anything could be- aside from not making it through. You are a strong woman- and I don't just mean because you lift. I hope you get some rest today and feel better soon!

Wow!! Hope you feel better soon. Go slow!! Especially with that much bleeding from surgical site!! LPN not an RN but have done so many posy surgery treatments can tell you not “common”!!! Relax. Stay on left side also for next 24-48 hrs. Keeps blood flow steady & BP down. Good luck!🍀

Thanks guys! I’m getting rest. I’ve gotten to do some things like pharmacy and Walmart after surgery, help at the school for AR testing and farm shopping Thur, virtual school yesterday... I hate sitting around for weeks so I’m getting things in as I can. Kinda enjoying not being able to clean the house lol. Have to start cooking again today as hubby leaves for his work fishing trip in a couple hours. So far he picked up Arby’s, cooked eggs and bacon and then we had leftovers. So I’ve been busy with the kids a bit but that’s about it. I don’t mind surgeries it’s the down time after that gets to me lol. And the staff at the hospital the last few times. Also the not knowing which bacteria for infection bothers me. Thankfully someone in the lab is updating my portal daily so I know there’s been no growth so far. As for diet, eh who cares right now. In a week I’ll be about the same as I was before surgery. My appetite comes and goes after this one so I’m eating what sounds good when it sounds good. Trying to stick to 1500+ as per drs request for better healing. Need to make some meal plans for next week that’ll include some veggies lol.

Peeper, I’m so sorry you had to go through all that! I know it’s hard to sit still, but hope you’re able to rest and recover quickly. I hope for quick results for you from the lab too. It would drive me crazy not knowing what’s wrong. Sending strength your way! 💖

How the heck did I not see this? I'm so sorry and hope you're doing better today. Prayers for a quick recovery, friend, you are really going through the wringer.

It was definitely an odd experience! I’m doing good. Tired a lot but that’s to be expected. Normally I’m energized and my team thinks it’s odd so I was due to have some fatigue this time. My only complaints for home recovery is I hate having this drain and I can’t do anything lol. They want me to take walks but the drain swings and get irritating. So for my ‘walk’ today we are going to the mall. Oldest needs some pumps so we get to go shoe shopping! 3-4 stores to go look through. After that I’m treating the girls and I to some Italian food! Then probably back home for a nap lol. My oldest is helping me with the laundry as I buy the largest laundry soap and softener so can’t lift it yet. She’s agreed to do some of the house cleaning in exchange for a nice pair of dress shoes. Win win!

Oh honey!! For your drain have you tried using a lanyard? I am so sorry for your experience. Nurses really can make or break a hospital stay 😔 Please do bother your doctor. I pray and hope your recovery goes smoothly.

I use a lanyard at home sometimes but if I’m doing anything it just swings. I prefer pinning it to my clothes. Right now I have it on my belt loop and a tunic shirt that covers it. At light I pin it to the middle of my bra so I’m less likely to catch the tubing on anything. I have a dr appt in 3 days so I’m hoping to find out everything then. I have a list of questions for him!

Sounds like a nightmare! So sorry! My husband had a drain tube once that bled for awhile after they sent us home. They didn't have any pads and we used paper towels too which is not hygienic when you have an open wound! Thankfully his bleeding stopped within an hour if i remember right. But a cup of blood sounds pretty serious. Hopefully it was other fluids the body produces as well, and you don't become anemic. It sounds like you're doing some better! Hang in there!

After looking at the bandage and seeing what I’m getting out of the drain bulb I’d say it was closer to 1/2 cup. The medical assistant didn’t seem worried when I told her about the Kleenex and paper towel I soaked through. Just thankful I didn’t give blood a couple weeks ago like I’d planned. Then I’d have been a little low lol. Now I can’t give until we figure out what infection I have and if it’s one in the blood stream.

Hang in there Peep! I pray they knock out that infection soon!
