"I have a secret... I used to be like one of these low carb zealots. It’s true. It was medical school before I actually treated patients. I learned personally from the famous low carb doctors of today as they took me under their wings. The story made sense. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. Carbs cause the most release of insulin compared to fat and protein. Therefore carbs make you fat. Further, the only way to lose weight if insulin resistant was to lower the carbs. Made sense to me. It was said that spiking your insulin worsened insulin resistance. None of this was actually true. It’s true that lowering your carb intake can acutely help with glycemic control... but it wasn’t until I started having patients who tried multiple ways that weren’t low carb where I HAD to open my eyes. How was it possible to lose weight and lower sugars with a high carb low fat diet if all these things were true? Anyway, the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and obesity isn’t due to carbs or insulin spiking. It’s due to energy excess that exceeds our usual capacity, which means the fat is stored in places it’s not supposed to be and over time our tissues become less responsive to insulin due to this not to mention our pancreas may not work as well." Anyway, I do love low carb diets for my patients with type 2 diabetes due to the acute improvements in sugars but I would lying if I said it were the only way to do it. #rpstrength #lchf #plantbased #iifym
