Kenna Morton's Journal, 01 Aug 20

I just finished reading the transcript of a webinar that I attended on the Corona virus. It is going to take several sessions to absorb it all but here is the quick and dirty. A little Saturday motivation to stay the course on your journeys to better weight control and health..

We know that type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol are really significant risk factors for this virus as they are major risk factors for many other diseases. But the reason is that this virus unlike many other bacteria and viruses does not replicate with sugar as a fuel, it replicates from lipids—- fat and cholesterol, which are both huge inflammatory triggers. Apparently a fatty, inflammatory environment within the cells is required for the virus to replicate. So where does that leave us, the virus’s future victims? Stay the course, loose the weight, take your statins if you have to but clean up your environment so that you are no longer the perfect host. They apparently have found a correlation for improved outcomes in people who are already taking statins for their high cholesterol and also those who are already taking prednisone for various conditions because it changes that inflammatory environment. Please don’t ask me for 10 pages of meta analysis or cites in clinical research journals. This is just a heads up as to one possible contribution to why the USA is doing so poorly in recovering from this. It may have a lot to do with our staggering obesity and type 2 diabetes numbers.

Very interesting, Kenna. Thanks for sharing. I had heard about weight being a factor, but I imagined it was the physical limitations with breathing that creates. My brother is just recovering now. I thought surely, if he got it, he wouldn't make it. But, he is three weeks out and just weak still. He is 12 years my senior, more than 300 pounds, and has been diabetic for more than ten years. It is by grace alone he is still OK.

Weight is an issue from the breathing perspective but on first pass of this article it is because our excess fat is not only on the hips and thighs but in our cells and that’s where the virus sets up housekeeping because there is an abundance of fuel.

My sister as well. She was already on a blood thinner and prednisone.
