We moved two hours north of where we were to Drummond, Montana. We arrived here yesterday and will be here through the weekend. I've never been here before, so it's nice to take my walks in a brand new place.

Photo Description:

1) This is downtown Drummond, Montana, USA.

2) I was woken up frequently last night as train after train passed through town wailing on their horns. Thankfully, I have the luxury of sleeping in each morning, so it was no big deal.

3) The Clark Fork River runs through town, and past the campground where we're camping.

4) Everyone here appears to have several horses (Equus ferus caballus). The windflowers in the foreground are tall hedge mustard (Sisymbrium loeselii).

5) This wildflower is called hoary alyssum (Berteroa incana). It's native to Eurasia and is an invasive species here in Montana. It's also poisonous to horses.

6) The animals here are so friendly. Today Kevin joined me on a walk, and a horse (Equus ferus caballus) came right up to us and stuck his head over the fence. The owner was nearby and said it was okay for us to pet him, so we did, which put a big smile on Kevin's face.

7) While I was out doing my walk, I happened upon this cute little calf (Bos taurus) sitting outside a latched gate. When the calf saw me it jumped up and ran to me as if it knew me, and it mooed at me. Of course I pet it for a few minutes, and took some pictures, and then started to continue my walk, but the calf started to follow me and mooed again, as if it were asking for help. I couldn't let the calf follow me, because at either end of the road are major highways, and the calf would surely wander into traffic. I could see that behind the gate where the calf had been sitting there were a bunch of cows and other calves. I looked around, but there was no one there that could help. Against my better judgment, I unlatched the gate, and let the calf in with the other cattle. I hope the calf belonged in there, or I may have just increased the property owner's herd by one. Regardless, I was able to continue my walk knowing the calf wasn't going to wander into traffic.

8) This wildflower is also an invasive species known as spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe). It's native to eastern Europe, and likely spread to North America in a shipment of alfalfa.

9) Drummond is surrounded by lovely mountains.

10) We have a great campsite in the city park.

Love all of them, but my favorite this time, hands down, is Kevin with that horse! Joy in the morning!

It's not totally free from some problems that arise occasionally, humpTdumpty, but I really love this RVing lifestyle. It's exciting seeing the similarities and differences from one place to another as we travel. From mountains to mesas, deserts to forests, from Alaska to Arizona, all of them have wildlife and wildflowers, and rocks and waterways, but they can be so different. There's also the features you don't find everywhere, like glaciers or geysers. Since this isn't a two-week vacation I'm on, and I RV fulltime, I get to stay in places long enough to get a feel for the nuances of living there. I just love it!

Great! That makes me feel better, peeperjj! I thought it was probably still nursing and eager to get back to momma. I hoped it's momma was in that pasture somewhere, or at least one of the other momma cows in there would take care of it. When I went back by there today, all the calves were at peace and looked like they were with their mom. I even think I saw my little friend with its mom, but since all the calves looked like carbon copies, I couldn't be sure it was the same one. Thanks for your comment, peeperjj!

That's my favorite too, shir! That horse was so pretty and friendly, and Kevin was so happy petting him, and the lighting and the background. It's just a great picture! Thanks for your comment, shir! 🙂

I want to visit Montana one day. Beautiful state.

Oh my goodness, I love these photos so much, Lonnie! 😍 So nice to see Kevin’s beautiful smile with that beautiful horse! It’s amazing how friendly those animals were. And that little calf is just adorable. 🥰 I think he wanted to follow you back to your site and hang out with you guys. What a sweetheart. I am sure you did the right thing by letting him into the gated area. If he doesn’t belong to that herd, the owner will figure it out I am sure. Sorry about the trains! I hear the subway trains from my apartment when I have the windows open, but I’m very used to the city noise. It’s actually very weird for me when I go on vacation and try to sleep without the city noise.. it’s almost too quiet, which keeps me awake. 😬 the views in Montana are truly breath taking. Enjoy that mountain air and please keep posting pix. Wishing you guys a lovely weekend. 💖

In my opinion, Montana is the most beautiful state (of the ones I've visited) in the lower 48 states, lacain57. You should definitely visit!

I'm glad you liked the pictures, newname! That calf was a sweetheart, and I would love to have kept him, but the camper's already full with me, Kevin and two dogs. I may trade the truck in for a horse now though, now that I see how happy they make Kevin. I just have to find one that can pull the camper. 🙂

Wow what beautiful pictures! Enjoy Lonnie! 😊

How lovely!! If the calf did not belong there the landowner will probably get it back to It's home. Used to live in farm country and had horses and a goat.

When I was a kid, we lived in Missoula, not far from Drummond. We camped all over that area. So beautiful. Your pictures really bring back good memories. And you're right - everyone has multiple horses!
