Informal poll. Anyone can play, chime in or comment.

Which do you consider a greater sin:
Wasting food or gluttony?

I’m referring to throwing food in the trash to stop eating.

And yes, control would be ideal.

But failing that - your plan B?

I put it in the fridge for leftovers 🤗 I really dislike wasting food. Out of my control when things like fresh fruits or veggies get yucky.

I hate food waste but I did find myself just the other night throwing something away to stop eating it. First time in forever.

There is zero food waste in my home. Nothing goes bad or spoils that gets put in the trash and nothing gets thrown in the bin to stop eating. So my answer is...…. gluttony would be the greater "sin". Plan B.... just try to keep those moments to a minimum and enjoy the roller coaster ride.

I'm the food vacuum in my home and always end up shrieking when I find a meal in the trash or even a bite that I could have eaten. 😂 If it doesn't go in my mouth, it goes to the chickens or the compost.

I hate wasting food you can usually turn it into leftovers or something else or freeze it. Scraps In my house are fed to the animals or composted. I have chickens also. I have been bad lately as not everything composted as I will be building a new compost bin. So peelings, scraps, etc. have been going in the trash until I get it built.

I freeze a lot of leftovers. But if I'm going to waste food, I'd rather waste it in the trash than in my body. I'm harming my body with food I don't need. Either way, it gets wasted.

leftovers is the lesser sin, in my opinion. You cana adjust shopping habits easier than putting discipline back in order. Atleast, thats how it is for me.

I have a hard time throwing away food. Ask my Hubby who finds little bits of leftovers lost in the fridge 😐 For some reason he won't throw them away himself after he says they've gone bad. I do try to use up leftover food. But, rather than eat something that isn't working with my plan it languishes in the fridge.

gluttony. wasted food is better than overeating; when you either waste or gobble up 2nds or 3rds.

Chris is correct on the moral implications of wasting food. Hunger not only in our country but others is a real issue. Not to go all PETA or vegan on anyone ( I do eat animal proteins), but if one does some research on all the natural resources and environmental impact that go into food products you would find it astounding. Grow the crops (needs water and fuel to run the tractors and other farm equipment(, water the crops, transport the crops, feed the cows with the grain products, water the cows, animal waste in our rivers and lakes, pollution in the air, transport the cows, process the cows, package the animal products using fuels, transport across the country, store in grocery stores wrapped in plastic and on Styrofoam trays prepared in plants, drive to the store to purchase the products, store in your electric appliances at home, prepare on your electric or gas stoves, wash the dishes you prepare the meals on. Does anyone realize how all that impacts the environment ? Then throw it in the trash ? If people are purchasing "snacks" or excess produce or other items at the grocery store and taking them home thinking they will eat them and then change their mind and toss them in the bin ? Not wasting food is about being accountable for your food choices on the front end with your eyes wide open that it is not just food you are throwing away. It is about portion control - preparing the amount you need for your family and serving on your plate an appropriate amount. Wasting and tossing food should not be someone's answer to weight loss. The issue is really gluttony and what people think is instant satisfaction purchasing and eating food products. Eating more than you need makes you fat. Sorry if I went off on a tangent. It isn't just about animal protein it is any food product whether prepared and processed and comes in a can box or bag at the grocery store. LOL

Definitely gluttony

Crazycatchick....I agree somewhat with what you're saying, but think about how much better our air quality/environmental pollution has gotten during all the coronavirus shutdowns. But farming and ranching (all food industry) has not stopped at all, even for a day. It's interesting to see where the pollution comes from now that we have real time data.

I think gluttony. I always told my child that she could throw away food on her plate. It will go back to nature somehow... but getting obese and sick you will waste a lot of resources. However of course we try to plan so the throwing out can be limited

My sister, who has been in a size 8 since our teenage years, and is now 80, throws out food rather than eat it just because it is there. I, on the otherhand, eat it rather than throw it out, and I've ballooned from a size 8 to something like an extra, extra large. Who has made the better choices? I'd say she wins the good medal.

If the food has spoiled, by all means, it should be tossed. That said, if you can't finish something, most cooked food can be frozen for later enjoyment. I think perhaps the gluttony might be said to be the greater sin; however, who are we to judge the mind of heart of someone. I have had days when there wasn't enough food to fill the empty ache of my heart and soul. My plan B is to be kind and utilize that freezing option.

I trend to be very frugal, read 'cheap' and therefore save all leftovers. Wrap them in plastic and put in fridge. Half a sandwich becomes tomorrow's lunch or even dinner. Every garbage day I go thru the fridge and throw away anything over 3-4 days old or freeze it. Larger leftovers, 3 cups of chili, 6 cups of turkey noodle soup, and so on, get carefully dated and frozen, Frozen stuff gets discovered at a future date and is dealt with accordingly, i.e. over a year old gets tossed. This way excess food is not wasted but is out a sight. Food wasted is gone. Gluttony remains.

Draglist - I grew up in a similar home in the Midwest. There was never any food waste and having grandparents and uncles who were farmers may have given me a different perspective. For us it isn't a matter of "saving " money by having a no food waste home. We have plenty of that. It comes from our understanding of resources used in bringing food of all types from the farm to table. Not to go off topic but we also don't purchase bottled water or use plastic, paper or Styrofoam plates, cups or cutlery. It is just who we are. This was a great question for Bella to ask... lots of interesting perspectives.

Depends. I have three large dogs, so mostly a non-issue. I also use pressure cooker and that repurposes a lot. I don't waste much very often, BUT if there is something like a leftover cake from an event in my house and I find I can't control myself, I will absolutely toss it if I can't get BF or neighbor to take it. Rarely happens, but gotta do. Mostly for crap food I wouldn't buy anyways. Gross veggies go into compost.

I'm both a glutton and a food waster. If it is delicious- there will be none left. If I buy a bunch of "healthy" veggies and such- it will be in the cripser (sp?) drawer in fridge until I toss it. about 50% of the time. So there ya have it- which is the greater sin? IDK- but I do both fairly regularly. Sad but true- not gonna lie about it. I hate liars. :(
