"Trigger Alert

After my post yesterday I thought I’d follow up with some science.

And some perspective.

If you read the comments on my post from yesterday.

You will see just how religious people become about their dietary choices.

One of the main reasons for this is that we are emotional beings.

Nothing that science can say will make someone dismiss their OWN EXPERIENCE.

If you were sick, & you changed something bout your diet, & you got better.

You don’t care what science says.

[Until you get sick again… if you’re unfortunate enough for that to happen.]

If I had managed to include Keto in the post yesterday, you’d have seen THREE religions battling it out.

The thing is, for those of us who understand PRINCIPLES we can see why they ‘believe’ what they do.

Let's put the ethical considerations aside because that isn’t something that science can really give us the ‘facts’ on.

If you haven’t ever watched the horrific videos of the mistreatment of animals I would encourage you to, at least once in your life.

Fortunately (for me at least) the farming practices in the UK are is VERY different from what you see in other countries.

But when it comes to HEALTH, FAT LOSS & PERFORMANCE, we have the science to guide us.

We know that removing things like meat, dairy & eggs completely has very minimal effects on cardiometabolic disease risk factors.

But often, when people go vegan they improve their previously poor diet.

Likewise, we see people go ‘carnivore’ & claim that has hugely improved their health or symptoms.

A ‘meat only’ diet is essentially a therapeutic fast.

It is an ‘idiots guide’ to an elimination diet (I mean that in the politest of ways).

Often people with IBS symptoms feel a lot better (in the short term).

Likewise, both of these ways of eating tends to reduce calorie intake.

In the short term, this improves health markers & sometimes feelings of wellbeing.

A meat-only diet really isn’t a good way to go LONG term. It’s almost certainly unhealthy.

With enough planning, a vegan diet CAN be complete & healthy.

Neither is superior to a more balanced approach.

Both are likely inferior longterm for most people, but everyone gets to choose their own path.

There haven’t really been any studies on the carnivore diet per se…

As its just kinda silly idea all-around.

On the flip side, we do have studies on vegan or vegan type diets.

For any of you geeks out there, have a read of the recent paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"A short-term religious “fast” from animal products have a minimal impact on cardiometabolic health biomarkers irrespective of concurrent shifts in distinct plant-based food groups”

What’s amazing is how the zealots fight their corner with such fervour.

Not realizing that the zealots on the other end of the spectrum have all the same ‘stories’ (fairy tales? Lol) about how THEIR diet is ‘optimal’.

While the rest of us sit in the middle, baffled at the power of personal bias.

“The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.”

I'll rebut it later

As far as protein from plants vs. meat/dairy, plants on average have less of the essential amino acids required for muscle growth so if you usually eat 140 grams before you were a vegan/vegetarian, you'd want to get ~180 to cover your bases. Vegetarians can get away with getting their protein from yogurt so they wouldn't be as deficient as vegans.

"The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science have all declared that there’s no good evidence GMOs are unsafe. Hundreds of studies back up that conclusion."

"Many anti-GMO activists and even some mainstream commentators claim there is a “debate” over the safety of genetically modified crops and foods. That is not the case. The bans that have been imposed in some countries on GMO crops or foods are political; they were voted in by politicians over the objections of independent international science organizations. Every major scientific body and regulatory agency in the world has reviewed the research about GMOs and openly declared crop biotechnology and the foods currently available for sale to be safe. GM crops are as safe–and in the case of nutrtionally enhanced varieties, such as Golden Rice, healthier–than conventional and organic crops. The consensus over the health and safety is as strong as the consensus that we are undergoing human induced climate change, vaccines are beneficial and not harmful and evolution is a fact. Last month we posted our first ever Genetic Literacy Project infographic: “10 Reasons why we need crop biotechnology”. We now have the latest GLP infographic: “International science organizations on crop biotechnology safety.”

It's safer for him to argue with me than to get arrested for protesting too. Mutual benefit. :P

GMO, evolution, climate change and vaccines... oh my. the goodness of all of them is based on opinions what the data we have available actually means, data which is limited. Radeon toothpaste and glowing chocolate are good examples why it's good to be sceptical no matter how strong consensus the scientists reach...

Your missing the whole point as to why peopke(besides the ethical treatment of animals, which had little bearing on my decision to be fair) adopt a plant based diet Diablo. Has 0 to do with personal heath for a great majority, and has more to do with food sustainability for future generations.
