Just as I thought, sugar itself is not addictive. Animal studies do not always apply to humans. High-fat savory(30%) was actually most addictive followed by high-fat sweet(25%). Mainly sugar-containing foods only accounted for 5%. As I always say, no one has issues with gummy bears like they do with chocolates, donuts, chips, ice cream, etc,. It's foods that contain more fat or equal amount of fat and carbs that can be the problem.

"Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS:
There is an increasing societal concern that consumption of specific foods such as sugar might become 'addictive' and, hence, promote weight gain. Claims about the addictiveness of sugar however are based largely on findings from few animal studies, whereas there is a lack of direct human evidence for symptoms of sugar-related substance dependence. The current study examined in a large sample of human participants whether foods mainly containing sugar in particular might cause 'addiction-like' problems that meet clinical DSM criteria for substance dependence, and, also whether in turn this relates to body weight and negative affectivity (depressed mood).

METHODS:
In a cross-sectional study, n = 1495 university students from a variety of faculties were assessed for DSM-related signs of food addiction for particular food categories (YFAS), and, also BMI and negative affectivity.

RESULTS:
Results revealed that from the total sample, 95% experienced at least one symptom of food dependence and 12.6% met the YFAS classification for 'food addiction' as related to DSM-IV criteria. The majority of respondents experienced these problems for combined high-fat savoury (30%) and high-fat sweet (25%) foods, whereas only a minority experienced such problems for low-fat/savoury (2%) and mainly sugar-containing foods (5%). Overweight correlated only with addictive-like problems for high-fat savoury and high-fat sweet foods (P < 0.0001), while this was not found for foods mainly containing sugar.

CONCLUSION:
The current findings indicate that sugary foods contribute minimally to 'food dependence' and increased risk of weight gain. Instead, they are consistent with the current scientific notion that food energy density, and the unique individual experience of eating, plays an important role in determining the reward value of food and promoting excessive energy intake."

So, since these hyperpalatible foods contain more fat than carbs let's start calling them fats instead. Innocent carbs have been beaten up too much over the years.

Yeah- take your gummy bears and hand over the snickers. ;) Makes a lot of sense. Wonder what falls into high fat savory? Pizza? I could eat a whole pizza- medium for sure- large- I'd have to pace myself- but I'd get 'er done. Donuts- I'll take 6 please.

So true, think about it, can you sit there and eat 3 full bowls of plain oatmeal ? (I doubt it) Now take those 3 bowls of oatmeal add butter, brown sugar, and spices, bake and you definitely could eat the whole tray of cookies.

Many sources cite sugar as being as addictive as street drugs. But related to consuming, yes, many foods would lose their allure for cravings and binge eating.

High fat savory I think is probably vinegary tasting foods. This study confirms much about what is already known about food addiction and confirms common sense knowledge. Just as someone can't eat a whole bowl of oatmeal, they will not eat a whole bowl of sugar as well. I think "sugar addition" is more of a pop turn than anything.

Rat studies. There was a study just yesterday showing that rats were actually more addicted to fat sources but I'm not going to post it because it applied to rats. This one was done with humans.

I'm not going to look for it but I've explained to people the true problem foods have more fat calories than carb calories. I was met with sugar being the reason because it's addictive. That is why I posted this. Carbs catch the blame. You never hear anyone say they went on a fat binge. They always say carbs which adds to the misinformation that carbs are fattening. I even see memes stating, "give me all the carbs" while showing pizza and donuts which are primarily fat

I agree, carbs have been beaten up too much over the years. I am happy they have you as their spokesperson. Poor unsweetened carbs. lol

If you're binging on fruit and gummy bears, you may be the exception. 😁

People are going to talk the talk, sometimes. Let them. It's just pop culture, which is so annoying in more ways than one. I think most folks should eat a diet rich in the right carbs. And am a huge believer in low fats/right fats. There are folks who have been so mean to their bodies that they do develop sensitivities. And may take time to reverse them. But, I suspect the number is much lower than those who claim it. But I cannot call it because I am not them.

I think it is perfectly okay to post animal studies. It is just sharing information. People should approach it in the same way they do preliminary human studies or human studies in general.

I thought you may like to know that a fs poll revealed most of us prefer binging to be spelled bingeing. And someone told me either is acceptable. 😉

So it's not okay to cook with lard and bacon grease? Everything tastes better with lard, especially my MIL's Fry Bread. My frijoles are always made with bacon grease. Yummers!
