**TESTOSTERONE AND OBESITY/DIABETES**

As the argument goes (from the keto side [simplified]): Consuming carbs spikes insulin and promotes fat storage. This excessive fat reduces insulin sensitivity which leads to gaining weight and a lack of control of blood sugar levels.

This is true. However...

Testosterone is a hormone that promotes drive and muscle growth in both men and women.

When it is low, one key thing that happens is it leads to a build up of visceral fat.

Visceral fat is the fat that collects around your organs, not the subcutaneous stuff in your arms, legs, back, etc..

HERE'S A MORE DIRECT MODEL:

(1) Visceral fat builds up over time from overconsumption of calories...

(2) This lowers insulin sensitivity (insulin receptors become less effective)...

(3) More fat is stored than burned over time when carbohydrates spike insulin levels...

(4) Insulin can't lower blood sugar levels appropriately...

(5) Leads to type 2 diabetes.

Some folks choose to reduce carb intake. However, if testosterone levels are low and cortisol is elevated (stressful life anyone?), then the losses will be targeting the excess water and subcutaneous fat primarily.

HOW WEIGHT TRAINING HELPS:

(1) Strenuous exercise like weight training increases testosterone and reduces cortisol levels putting both hormones back in a healthy range...

(2) This causes the visceral fat to be oxidized (burned) more efficiently as testosterone is a "visceral fat hunter" and overall fat storage reduced when caloric restrictions are applied...

(3) The carbs consumed are then burned more efficiently to provide more energy to the body...

(4) This leads to a loss of visceral fat which will restore insulin sensitivity.

Hormones play such an integral role in all the processes of the body. It's a good idea to have hormone levels tested, but most M.D.s don't do this. Even my endocrinologist is resistant to doing a full thyroid panel -- when I have ultrasound findings consistent with goiter and TSH and T4 levels consistent with hypothyroidism. I'm more convinced than ever that a complete physical examination, if someone is overweight or obese, should include a complete hormone profile.

From the cited article, above: "Research has shown a significant link exists between low levels of testosterone and type 2 diabetes in men whilst showing associations between high testosterone levels in women with type 2 diabetes."

Chris and Mira, great information. A little Sunday learning session is awesome.

The things you'll post just to get me motivated to bring pizza to a gym.

🍕🍕🧀🧀 Haha.. apparently those gym memberships are too expensive for me. I saw four guys standing out front sharing the same cigarette. Health at a cost, huh?

Being overweight does not cause type 2 diabetes. A T2 diabetic produces excess insulin, which drives fat storage, increased weight, and eventually, insulin resistance. Losing weight does not cure T2D; but T2D can be reversed by restricting carbs, which drives lower insulin production, and eventually, improves insulin sensitivity. Weight loss results from the reduced insulin production. Carbs don't make a T2 diabetic fat, but do drive greater production of insulin than fats or proteins.

Don't worry about Gz9gjg, she never presents science to back her claims. Obesity raises your chances of getting T2D and may even be THE reason we get it and losing fat and exercising goes a LONG way in reversing it. I remember Phil and others saying I would get diabetes one day because of my high sugar/carb intake. It makes me smile.

@Gz9gjg---what were the numbers you cite for reversal of Type 2? A1c of______? I can't remember but I found the idea interesting.

On the topic of insulin. Fat stimulates acylation stimulating protein, which raises insulin so that fat is stored even if you ate nothing but fat. Protein also raises insulin as well. You can't trick your body into not storing fat if you're in an energy surplus it is smarter than keto zealots give it credit for. CICO always applies.

Thanks for the info Chrisw77

A big problem is, most people that acquired type 2 let it get out of control so bad that now they have other chronic issues that prevent them from doing resistance training of almost any sort...so it goes back to diet alone for those people.

gz9gjg, The claim that T2 diabetes isn’t caused in large part by weight really formed against the medical consensus I’ve heard. Do you happen to have s link with a medical source with some new studies?

gz9gig and Keyten are both right 💯. Chris is right 💯 in regards to hormones. Too much testosterone in a female can lead to one dx of PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. However, not all females are over weight who have PCOS, infact, some are the recommended weight for height. Insulin resistance is something that can happen to a underweight child , especially with a family hx of diabetes mellitus on maternal as paternal sides, who then gains rapidly and bloodwork will show a hormone imbalance and an elevated A1c. You can absolutely reverse Type II diabetes and lower your average 3 month A1C and daily blood glucose levels and get off Metformin, what have you. But it cannot be cured. It’s hormones, it’s genetics, it’s just gaining weight as well. So many key things come into play. Sometimes I wish a doctor or PA-C would just jump on one of these weekly posts that end up turning negative and lay it out.

The explanation of how T2D develops is more complex than can be easily explained in an Internet article or a forum posting. Talk to an endocrinologist who treats type 2 diabetics and Metabolic Syndrome.

Terrapin, my doctor says A1c of 5.7 is high/abnormal. For research demonstrating reversal of T2D, I suggest you read this: https://blog.virtahealth.com/2yr-t2d-trial-outcomes-virta-nutritional-ketosis/

Gz9gjg thanks. I'll read it later tonight.
