Kenna Morton's Journal, 06 Aug 19

One of my favorite pictures of my dad is of him at age 10 sitting on a monster sized combine type tractor plowing a field with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. His dad died in a farming accident and all the boys had to quit school to run the farm. He eventually made it through sixth grade and that was it. He was actually a brilliant man. There was nothing he could not do. Education was a given in our family- it was never discussed, it was assumed that the 3 of us would go to college. To that end, my folks sat at the kitchen table every single night while we did homework, just in case we needed help. My mom would write letters and my dad would read the paper. As we got older, my dad covered math and science and my mom shorthand, English, humanities. As my dad sat and helped me with my geometry and calculus I wondered how he knew this stuff but never carried that question any further. As an adult, my mom told me that after we went to bed my dad took our math books and worked ahead a few chapters and taught himself enough to be able to help. And then he got up at 5 am to go to work. I wish I could go back in time and thank my folks again for all those SMALL things they did that shaped who my brother, sister and I became.. the impending return of the bookcase my dad build has brought up so many memories. And then there is this—- they were both a royal pain in the ass. It took me years to fully appreciate them.

Seems like I needed to get old enough for cataracts before I could look back and see clearly what good parents I had.

I was 16 when I graduated from high school and moved to a dormitory at BIG LA County USC School of Nursing in downtown Los Angeles. I turned 17 just a few weeks later. When my dad got me all settled he spent 30 minutes teaching me to make a budget (I had a $30 a month allowance) and as he was leaving he cautioned me that if I was ever out with someone and they started drinking that I was to call him and he would come get me. Later that year it happened. I was up in the Hollywood Hills somewhere and the medical resident that I had gone with got plastered and he had a stick shift sports car. I did not know how to drive it.. I called my dad at 1 am in the morning on a workday, told him my story. He sent me outside to get the name of the closest cross streets, told me to just sit tight and he would be there. He lived 35 miles away. Well, he found me and took me back to the dorm, kissed me good night and it was never ever mentioned, not even after I was an adult. I never did that again, ever. Soon after, he taught me to drive stick.

Your Dad sounds so familiar to me. He loved you guys alot and did everything in his power to make sure you had a solid foundation to build from for you and your posterity and his sake. I'm rambling... I think its time to get some rest. goodnight

What a wonderful dad... I also understand about parents being difficult. I learned about 20 years ago that the majority of people are doing the best they can with what they have to work with. I still forget this, but it’s helped me to be more understanding.

Laraae—you are so correct. Kids don’t come with an instruction manual taped to their forehead and the majority of people do the very best they know how and that often times means taking a page out of their own parents handbook. And in days past there was no internet to get any kind of help with. I could never, ever fault my folks— they did a terrific job. My siblings and I all took different paths but we turned out just fine.

My dad died in 2001 and my mom about 10 years before that. Neither of them had to deal with a thing. My sister managed their finances and all the insurance issues and I managed all their medical care including making that final decision of when it was time to cease treatment and pull the plug. Thats the way they wanted it done. My brother lives outside Washington DC so he missed the whole show both times. It still haunts him that he wasn’t closer to be of more help.. I’m still in a very reflective mind set today.
