Ironically, I met a gal at my pool yesterday who had had bariatric surgery 4-5 years ago (I didn’t ask what type). Like me, she is at the pool six days a week. We have never really met because I swim and she does the water exercise classes. But, we did have that chance yesterday. She is 60, really in great shape and has the muscle and stamina that goes with it. She said that although she is not sorry she did the surgery, she wishes she had just done the things diet and activity wise that she does now. She had to go through a rigorous 13 wk program of nutritional education, cooking classes, counseling and psychiatric evaluation before she received her final approval for the procedure. She said the doctor was very blunt. He refused more than 50% of the applicants because they were looking for a painless, quick fix that wouldn’t require them to exercise.

She had no complications and all went well. She said that she will never be able to eat beef again—- especially steak. She just can't get it to go down. Apparently that is not at all uncommon. They had told her to wait a year before trying for the first time— and she did wait. Just A food she will never be able to eat. Now she eats mostly fish, legumes, whole grains and plant based And has no problem. She, on her own, continued with her nutrition classes and still takes cooking classes just for fun.

Her diabetes and high blood pressure were reversed, but she still has to be cautious about the carb count and loosely follows a diabetic diet of about 150 carbs a day which fits perfectly into her preferred way of eating now. Neat gal. She is a walker like I am so we are going to get together and do some hiking.

Keyten77—this gal is 4-5years out from her surgery and no longer trying to loose weight. She is in long term maintenance. She is very active and BS are well controlled. She does not need to test at this point . She has blood work done every three months with a FBS and a1c. She has been consistently in the mid 5 range for several years. Boy is she DILIGENT. She says that if she wants a treat, she will have one but she tries to build them into her diet rather than eat them in an unplanned manner. She said sweets really no longer are that appealing to her..

Also K10 This gal’s WOE I think makes a big difference, mostly complex carbs, very little processed food or fast food on a routine basis and she does make a point of physical activity after meals, mostly walking.

When you are working it is HARD. Activity, even a 15 minute walk, about an hour after you eat allows the body to actually use the carbs you have just eaten as it’s immediate glucose source. This gal subscribes to the same practice. When you work, you can only do what you can— I realize that makes it difficult.

Ah, yes. I was reading and re-reading some posts discussing the ADA and their standards for caloric needs relative to MACROS. I think folks fail to understand low in the medical community is around XXX grams, not 20 or less. The k-e-t-o is so restrictive relative to other protocols and folks seem to forget guidelines are used for the whole population not just designed to kill us. Guidelines are like willow trees not an oak. Also, people here have a tendency to avoid what we know works. A short brief bit of movement post meal is a simple and sustainable option with glucose and use by the body. Love the idea and easy for most to execute and repeat. She sounds like she has got it down Kenna.
