Kenna Morton's Journal, 29 Mar 19

I have an acquaintance who is my age (71] . For some reason she got started writing letters to her future self when she was in her 20s.. in times of crisis and times of being at a crossroads where decisions had to be made she put her thoughts in writing explaining why she made certain decisions . She said that that future-elderly woman became real for her and she began to consider her when she had choices to make.. she said that she thought that someday she would be standing in front of a mirror and the elderly women that looked back at her was asking why did you do this to me— why didn’t you help me. She opens those letters a reads them once in a while. There are several hundred of them. The “elderly” woman would like to be able to hug that young girl and let her know that things turn out ok and thank her for caring about her all these years.

So cool. And it's really never too late to start this. To be able to look back five years from now with an explanation of why I did what I did rather than 'well, that happened'. Will it change anything? I don't know. Acceptance is key.

FullaBella— what I forgot to mention is that my friend writes notes back to her younger self— telling her how things turned out. What she could have done differently to maybe Change a poor outcome, or to tell her it is ok, we all make mistakes. She feels that for her it is incredible therapy. Like many of us, or let me rephrase that—- ALL of us, have had rough lives in one way or another, and this has helped her a lot to put it all in perspective.
