Kenna Morton's Journal, 28 Mar 19

Response to a PM. The very first person I mentored on a weight loss journey was almost 35 years ago. He was 18, not real tall and about 50 lb. overweigt, and had became depressed. His friends, including my daughter, became concerned that he might be a suicide risk. I was asked to see if there was anything I could do to help. I agreed. I was a nurse at the time but really, diet management wasn’t anywhere in my area of expertise, but psychological and emotional issue was something I was pretty comfortable with. I met with him and we talked about what he currently ate and the food or foods that were so important to him that it would ruin his life not to be able to have once in a while. His was Baskin Robin’s ice cream. Together we built a WOE for him that was based on eating a better diet most of the time and allowing eating not so diet friendly foods once in a while in moderation. The way I addressed his ice cream issue was by including one scoop of his favorite ice cream every day without fail. The closest Baskin Robins was 2 miles away and he had to walk it. He did not have the binge issues that I see here, nor the obsessive behavior that made him not be able to stop once he started. He just simply loved to eat good food, had lots of friends and ate almost all fast food. After four months of doing well on his weight management program he called me and asked if he could stop the ice cream and put those calories back into his daily calorie bank. He was sick of ice cream. Whether that would ever be considered a good strategy by someone more knowledgeable, I don’t know, but for him, by removing the forbiddeness of that highly desired food item it removed that psychological issue of not ever being able to have that thing again. Then he made the decision to remove it from his WOE, but knowing that if he wanted a scoop, he could build it into his overall plan. It took about 8 months for him to loose his weight but it was painless for him. I still know this young man. He is about 50 and he has never regained the weight . During that time with him we spent some time learning a little about nutrition and the important things to eat for good health.

Down the line a bit was a gal in the entertainment business, a singer, who weight approx 400-450. I cant remember exactly.. She was also depressed and had become socially isolated because of her weight. Her thing that she wanted more than anything was to be able to go for pizza and beer with her co-workers on Friday nights, but she felt like she shouldn’t because she was so obese. Again we built a WOE for her that included 2 pieces of pizza and a beer every Friday. It was part of her program, not a cheat meal. Nothing to be ashamed of or feel quilty for.. she thrived. She followed her program religiously and lost about 250 lb. in 2 years. I still see her once in a while and we talk on the phone every few months. She has also maintained that weight loss and more for 20 years. She was a mindless, bored eater but did not have the psychological binge eating situation. She was 5’10” btw. The other thing I did with this gal was tell her not to say anything to anyone about being on a diet. When a person is that heavy they usually have to loose a lot, like 50-60 lbs before it even becomes noticeable. The secrec got out when the costume fitter at her job had to keep making alterations to her costume. I also urged her to not talk about it as much as possible because over that length of time friends and family develop diet fatigue Themselves. And, of course there was physical activity involved in her success. I met her at the pool where I swam every day. She continued to swim and do the water exercise classes.

I have half a dozen stories like this. I know a lot more than I did back in those days, but I still follow that same model. One ongoing part of what I do is to have the people take responsibility for learning a bit about nutrition and to learn to cook meals that they like themselves and to stay out of FF places and restaurants as much as possible.

I hope this answers the question put to me in the Im

Amazing. I too have a friend who’s issue was ice cream. She basically forced herself to eat it in huge amounts every day until she could not stand it. Solved her problem and as far as I know, hasn’t had ice cream for years!!! Interesting strategy that truly works it seems! 🤔 Good help you gave Kenna. Great stories!

I only had him ear one scoop— more would defeat the diet, but remember, he also had or WALK 4 miles every day.
