Responding to a PM about the fact that my breakfast and my lunch are almost always exactly the same everyday and that my breakfast has a fair amount of sugar.. That’s true. I have eaten toast, egg, grape juice (no redeeming quality) and international Coffee Cappuccino (also no redeeming quality) every morning for most of my adult life. Especially having had a job where I never knew when or if lunch would come, this was a combo that worked well for me and it makes my day start off just perfect. What I have done to mitigate the sugar content is to eat the same foods but decrease the amount. The juice requires 3 cans of water to reconstitute- I use 4. I fill an 6 ounce glass with ice add a small amount of unsweetened hibiscus tea and then add the juice. In all, it gives me 2 oz. of the high sugar juice. My cappuccino also has no redeeming nutritional value but I have been drinking it for 40 years and at this point have no immediate plan to delete it from my comfort food list. A serving is 1 1/3 tablespoons of the mix and just six oz of water— so that is exactly how I make it in a small cup. Then I swim for 2 hours and those sugars fuel my efforts and they are gone. So for me, it is not about giving up something I love but compromising in order to keep them in my diet that is important to me.

I get unsolicited "suggestions" about my diet and I respond with a few "suggestions" of what they can do with their advice. :D Some people think that EVERYONE has to change their entire way of eating at once. The key to life long healthy habits is to implement small changes over time... and that takes TIME. Maybe, if you feel like, you might want to have fresh grapes instead of juice one day a week, but if not, so what. If you enjoy the consistency and dependability in your lifestyle, so be it.

Resveratrol/antioxidants in grape juice might be a redeeming quality?

I’m 70, in reasonable good health, not overweight and never have been. My a1c is 4.8-5 consistently and I take no medications for anything. Physical activity is part of my life every day. I monitor my macros here, but am more concerned with maintaining my micros on a consistent basis but that I have to do manually with paper and pencil. I have followed my portion controlled, moderation, no restricted foods WOE for more than 20 years and so far so good. I eat a healthy diet most of the time, but if I am really craving something, I just eat it— in a responsible manner. I have never been a binge, pig out eater. I DONT BELIEVE in “cheat meals”, I don’t need to forgive myself for anything I choose to eat— I eat it and just continue on with my normal way of doing things. It works for me and for many other people that I have mentored on weight loss journeys over the last 40 years. I try to follow the ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure philosophy.

Kenna, I am 69 and also in good health, take no meds and usually eat whatever I want....in moderation. Last year I moved back to my home town after being gone for over 40 years. I have put on too many pounds since then (home town food is sooooo good) so I'm cutting back now. And like too many of us, I'm also getting unsolicited advice from people who are not nearly as healthy and active. Just grin and bear it...

Their redeeming quality is in their comfort and convenience. If it works for you then go for it. We all have things that we don't want to give up and are willing to make room for!!

Also I love the idea of mixing the hibiscus tea and the juice! I will have to play with that one!

Keyten77– my dad’s sisters were all short and as wide as they were tall. I think what has helped over the years has been swimming, surfing, long distance hikes, etcetra. Just being out and about all the time and staying active. I had one vag birth and a c-section.

Katies71. I make my own hibiscus ice tea fro scratch from the dried flowers that I buy from Frontier Co-op on line. Indigionous peoples, (Spanish, Indian and Mexican) have used hibiscus for centuries. It is useful for BS stableization and lowering blood pressure. The same with Nopales [cactus)— I eat a lot of it. It has the same medicinal properties. When I first heard about these claims from an old Indian lady many years ago I took the time to do the research from a medical and scientific point of view and the claims have validity. I eat Nopales because I love them in salsa, scrambled eggs, tacos and alongside fried potatoes in the morning for breakfast. They also have a lot of micro nutrientional value.

MsMaxx- I didn’t take any offense to her question— I think she was just trying to be helpful. Most of the time we read people’s posts but don’t know the whole story. I have learned many things since being on FS and appreciate people sharing. I recently went to a three day obesity conference and learned a lot. The struggle is real for most—-everyone finds a way. In the back of my mind I feel bad sometimes because I know what the last half of life’s road may have in store for them.

Probably they ask you, because some people think that when you are trying to lose weight you have to eliminate almost every kind of food from your diet. 🤦‍♀️
