Reminds me March 2011. My wife in the intensive care unit for 36 days, 30 of them in artificial coma. Fed by 13 different bottles electronically controlled. H1N1 followed by various complications. Her brother died at the icu of another hospital from the same cause while she was at the rehabilitation center. A sad benchmark in our lives.

Oh yes H1N1 pandemic of 2009. Thank goodness for vaccines now. It is overwhelming for families to walk into a room like this for the first time and see a loved one attached to all this stuff.. I hope things turned out ok for your wife..

She survived. But she is not the same person. Mentally, psychological and physical. For much worse.

I am so very sorry. As nurses who care for these types of patients we seldom actually learn how things turn out in the long haul. In our minds we speculate based on experience. We are encouraged when we hear the good things and pray always that we are doing the right thing and what the patient would choose to have done if they could decide. There is no right or wrong— we are there first and foremost to support the patient and family.
