BuffyBear's Journal, 30 Aug 12

Kind of sad - last night I picked the last tomato and squash from the garden. All I have left is a few peppers. Oh well, it was great while it lasted.

Going to the mall tonight to buy exercise shoes - the new "barefoot" kind are on sale. Maybe this will help get me off my butt!

Today I am thankful for my car. I paid off my loan Wednesday so now I officially own it. Feels good!

I had a problem with my squash this year. It grew big and had a lot of flowers and even a few squash before it all died. One day my squash was growing and the next it was all shriveled up. I'm still waiting for my tomatoes to turn.

Wow a debt free car, in a garage, attached to your kitchen, with a door!!!!! There's a grateful list to be proud of!!! Enjoy your shoe shopping :)

Have fun trying on those shoes! I've seen them (contestant on Survivor had a pair, I think...) but can't decide if they'd be comfy or not. But, I guess they'd be no worse than toe socks and some people swear by those. Our tomatoes have been done for quite awhile, but DH was encouraged by a couple of late-season flowers and tiny, developing tomatoes. Unfortunately, he took down their big support structure this past weekend, figuring that Hurricane Isaac would make it into a missile. But....without the end of summer, we wouldn't get all those beautiful fall colors and.....FOOTBALL!!!!!

Most of our tomatoes are still green. We had a cool beginning to summer then it got to be 100+ and burned them. We did get lots of peppers and even one cucumber. So nice for you no longer having a car payment. Very cool.

It's so funny to hear from people all over with their gardens in the various different stages. My tomatoes are going full force, we can't eat them fast enough. The yield is certainly lower than past years, I would have liked to freeze way more than I will be. My butternut squash are just starting to yellow. I am so happy you are done with the car payment thing...congrats...celebration would really be in order. I have looked at those shoes....glad to know somebody who is willing to try them...let us know what you think. Have a great weekend Buffy!!

We are doing a CSA this year. We don't have a flat and sunny patch to be able to effectively do a vegetable garden. I like that i get more variety than I ever could with my own garden...but there are never nearly as many tomatoes as there are with a home garden. But, we will continue on through October getting veggies. I think they are winding down on tomatoes as well, but the greens are starting in strong again.

DavidsMom - hope you get to enjoy your tomato soon. Nothing like the first bite of one you've grown yourself.

Tracy - You've noticed - I'm spoiled beyond belief!

Sandy - Sorry Isaac ruined your second crop. but I like your attitude - each season has its own unique blessings.

Like you, my dad had a green thumb, and for years had a variety of things growing in his garden. I may have inheirited a love of cooking, but have no desire to work the garden at all. Enjoy your harvest! :-)

Karen - well, at least we've got peppers - and they are good in almost anything!

Bren - I have a very small garden. You'd be surprised what you can get off just a couple of plants. Plus, you don't have to worry about your veggies being drenched in pesticide, etc.

GG - I've noticed the same thing. When I went to my family reunion in Northern NY the end of July, I took a big box of tomatoes. It was a very popular contribution because theirs were not ripe yet.

yduj57 - That is great that you have that opportunity. And I bet it helps bring the neighborhood together as well.

ShyGuy - Nice to hear from you - I've been missing you on here. I am fortunate that DH helps with the garden. I also like to cook. I made sour cream and onion pork chops tonight.

I miss my old backyard. I had about 10' x 20' to grow whatever I wanted. Truly thankful that my son was able to spend his earlier years eating lunch out in the garden. These days I make sure to hit up the farmers market every Sunday morning for as long as it is open. And we visit nearby farms when we can, especially in the fall. Lucky you on finishing up those car payments. I'm driving my minivan to the ground and then we'll be taking on a car payment of our own.

My container garden started out great then some bugs got to it after I removed them from my deck closer to the ground. I still am getting banana peppers. YAY! How cool to pay off your car! WTG!
