Kenna Morton's Journal, 08 Sep 18

I have a Place up in Sequoia National Forest that I bought about 22 years ago. I belonged to the Sierra Club at the time and we were given an opportunity to buy an old 750 acre, 1920s logging town complete with saloon, jail and 90 little cabins. So we did. 20 years of great times and hard work. We had 100 horses . It was on the Kern River with class IV and V rapids in a non draught year. Mountains to climb, bears, mountain lions and lots of snakes. My life and the life of everybody I knew revolved around the Ranch. Every six to eight weeks we went and spent time there. We all sold our cars and bought trucks— It changed our world. Our kids met and married people that they met there. Relationships never flourished because they were not “RANCH” people. Halloween’s were AWESOME. —- now, the kids are grown, friends have retired and moved and the rest are really no longer able to do the hikes and all the other things that were a regular part of our lives.. Obesity, and diabetes have taken a real toll.

Last time I went up— I met a man who was the guest of another owner. He had 5 kids, all little boys, and he lived just a hundred miles away. He fell in love with the Ranch but didn’t think he could ever afford to buy an ownership. I saw him off and on for the week I was there and finally went to see he and his wife and told them I had a gift for them.—- I gave them my Ranch. The look on their faces and the pictures they send to me more than makes up for the money I might have gotten.

I gave them everything they needed to get started— so they had nothing to buy.

Sooo today— I am finally getting rid of the Ranch related items I will not need. All the deep winter clothes, jackets, boots, snowshoes —- definitely bitter sweet. But it was time and NOW I have no other choice but to take off other places. As long as I owned it I knew I would never go anyplace else. If I drank— I would have a beer, but I don’t. I’ll put up a couple of pictures.

I could, but it would be too painful. But I will rent a cabin someplace close by sometime and spend some time. Our cabins on the Ranch are never for rent. They are just for the use of the owners and quests. As an owner you always have to be there with your guests. It I will rent a mountain cabin up there some place.

Incredible story. Lots of emotions fly around in my body from reading this. The joy, the years. Technically the ranch is still yours to enjoy, but the maintenance part you've now left for others. With that you do a new kind of freedom. How to use it... time will sort that too I guess. Beautiful place. To have this as part of life just beautiful. Like you did a huge favor, they would do what they can for you too I am tempted to think. The emotions... feel them

Diddlee— they told me to come up with them anytime, but— 5 kids? I do have to go back up because I have maps to draw and places to take just the man that he would probably not find on his own. I know, so many people thought I was crazy., but it has made me happy. We were a limited partnership— NOT A TIME SHARE. I was able to call and make a reservation anytime I wanted and stay up to 3 weeks. After I retired, I went up every month and spent 7-10 days. Sometimes with friends and sometimes alone... the smallest cabin slept 2 people and the biggest slept 22 because it was once a bunkhouse. Worked out great. If I would have sold it for real money I’m not really sure what it was worth. But this worked out perfect.

I did Becca P. Thank you. I’m a believer in the saying, “you don’t have to attend every argument you are invited too”. Maybe she has never been on the receiving end of a gift— or on the giving end of a gift.
