So what about the brain—-
Weighs 3 pounds—your skin weighs twice as much (or more)— made up of 75% water— it is the fattest organ in your body being made up of at least 60% fat—has up to 100 billion neurons— there are from 1:000 to 10,000 synapses for each neuron —your brain has no pain receptors. It feels no pain. That’s why people can be awake and talk to the surgeon during brain surgery, and are often required to be, sedated but awake.—-there are 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain alone.

At birth your brain is almost as big as an adult’s and contains most of the brain cells for your WHOLE LIFE—Humans continue to make new neuron throughout life in response to mental activity (go to school, play6 Soduku, jigsaw puzzles)

In utero, the first sense to develop is touch-lips and cheeks at about 8 weeks and the rest of the body by 12 weeks.
The brain uses 20% of the total oxygen in your body—while awake your brain generates 10-23 watts of power, enough to power a lightbulb.

It is not true that humans only use 10% of the brain. Every part of the brain has a known, specific function— you brain lives 4-6 minutes without oxygen then begins to die. 5-10 minutes without oxygen is severe brain damage, death UNLESS YOU ARE UNDER COLD WATER OR FREEZING OUTSIDE. the old ER mantra is a pt. Is not dead until are WARM AND DEAD.

You cannot tickle yourself because it distinguishes between unexpected external touch and your own touch.
Some people only dream in black and white and while most others dream in color.

While you sleep, your body produces a hormone that may prevent you from acting out your dreams leaving you virtually paralyzed— we used to get people in the ER once in a while at night who had awakened and be unable to move. Very scared by the event so came in. Back in the day we were just able to calm them, explain the phenomenon and send them home. Today, thanks to lawsuits, or as many here would say “money grubbing doctors and hospital” a CT will often be done to rule out stroke.

I could go on forever on the subject of the brain, but these are all just sort of fun, interesting facts.

Take home message is be good to your body—- it is STRUGGLING TO DO ITS BEST FOR YOU.
