Yes, I have seen malaria many times but only once here in the USA. I was coming on shift in my ER and most of the crew were working with an Asian gal who did not speak English and there was not one with her to interpret.. obviously very ill.. I scanned the doctors notes on his history/physical and knew right away what the problem was. I went to the bedside and just said MALARIA @and pointed to her and she wildly nodded her head yes. As I suspected, she had malaria about a year before in Laos and recovered. It is not unusual for the parasite to live and attack the liver about a year later and that is what happened. Ultimately she did well. Many of the docs out there today are young and have never encountered some of these diseases.
