This week I have read at least three posts regarding women and hair loss. I just want to toss a little information out for those who might be interested.

People become so focused on their “macros” that they do not think of the extreme importance of their “micros” to their overall health. Let’s talk about Potassium (K).

FIRST OF ALL-A HIGH POTASSIUM LEVEL WILL KILL YOU AND A LOW POTASSIUM LEVEL WILL KILL YOU.
our primary sources of K are in the fruits and vegetable category. Potatoes are a big one are are many beans.

A K deficiency (hypokalemia) is a not uncommon cause of hair loss among dieters who follow ways of eating that limit or restrict these types of food groups. A diet high in salt can cause a build up of sodium around the hair follicles preventing the absorption of nutrients. Follicles die and hair falls out. So the more sodium you take in the greater the potential build up. Low potassium levels result in a feeling of fatigue, stress, irritation and headaches.and decrease in mental clarity.

Potassium is involved in how glucose is transported and can affect weight gain and loss. potassium is ESSENTIAL for muscle function and the conduction of nerve impulses.

Weight loss can reduce the enzyme activity that controls the flow of sodium and potassium in and out of the cells significantly often resulting in bloating, constipation and swelling..

It is almost impossible to EAT too much potassium— but do not take any kind of potassium supplement without being under the care of a doctor. In my nursing career I have seen more than my share of DD (dead dieters) who have taken potassium supplements or diieted and depleted their potassium. This is one of several micros that should be followed.
