Kenna Morton's Journal, 17 Jun 18

This has been a monumental weekend. my 12 year old friend (THE GENERAL) who was an obese 8 year old when I first met her achieved her goal today—- she completed her first marathon. That is 26 miles. Her mother was 300 lb and 5’3” four years ago and she completed her first half marathon- 13 miles and weighs just 135 pounds. And next weekend she is getting married to a wonderful guy we all call SARGENT. He shares their lifestyle, WOE, and is the only one now who can keep up with THE GENERAL
In these races. They are moving about 30 miles away. THE GENERAL always asks me if I am still going to be GRANDMA KENNA—the answer is OF COURSE.

The mom lost 175 lb. in a year without “dieting” like so many people here are doing. portion control, better choices, increased activity. No forbidden foods, mindful of eating habits etc. I use a completely different philosophy when I get involved in helping someone. No “after diet” maintenance, it is a complete way of eating and living—- a true lifestyle change that is easy to live with forever. She has since gone to school and is now a real lifestyle coach and has just gone to work for a large healthcare organization. The little girl, “THE GENERAL”, went from being an obese 8 year old who was bullied in school to a straight A student and now a successful marathon runner. She will be 13in September. I am so proud of them both.

You have done great. I have read up a lot about Keto dieting since I joined this site. There is certainly a fair amount of evidence out there that it is a valid way of quickly loosing weight for people who are very overweight—- but it is viewed more as a short term intervention because for most people it is not sustainable long term. And, once the weight loss goal has been achieved,, people still have some kind of maintenance to work out and that is where things often fall apart. The expectation is that they can resume some sort of normal life and normal WOE that fits in with their family and social lives. But often times the food coping skills still aren’t there and so life continues with “cheats meals that stretch into days and even a week. And so it goes.
