Kenna Morton's Journal, 02 Jun 18

Many years ago While I was at work at the.hospital I Got called to the OR to take a young man to my neuro interventional department for a post operative cerebral angiogram. He was 18 and had a cancerous brain lesion that had to be removed. He and his family knew that the young man who went into that surgery suite was not going to be the same one who came out.
The surgery was a “success” and he lived, but his speech was severely affected, blind in one eye, hard time swallowing, almost complete loss of memory of events prior to the surgery, upper body weakness and on and on. He was on life support, we did our exam and I went on to the next case——————- fast forward 20+ years. I was at the gym one day and a man came out of the sauna and we almost ran into each other. I recognized him immediately, apologized for the near miss and went on to the pool. Several more trips to the gym came about and he was always there, watching. Finally one day he got in the jacuzzi after I did and said that he thought he knew me from somewhere but didn’t know from where. He said he remembered my voice. I didn’t say anything about recognizing him. Now, he was pretty intimidating in his appearance. Covered in tattoos from head to toe and muscles like I had never seen before, a patch over his blind eye and those incredible scars on his face and head. They callled him Popeye. As time went on we became good buddies and spent a lot of time talking about his life and he explained what had happened to him. I still had not told him “OUR STORY” and I never did. But one day he asked me if I would teach him to read. His reading ability was about 2nd grade. So for almost a six months we met at the gym and spent time working on his reading. Then he disappeared for a couple of years— we assumed he was in jail (violent behavior and alcohol”. Well I saw him again today— he worked on his reading while he was in jail and was proud of how much he had accomplished since we last worked together. A patient I will never forget. Just One of dozens. Being a nurse was the very best job in the world..

Great post, it amazes me sometimes how people’s lives cross paths more than once when you least expect it.

What an incredible story. Nurses are angels. I wish I could do it, but I can't stand being in hospitals. I am so glad there are angels on earth like you, that are here and do it. Bless you!

I was a nurse for 44 years. Left for nursing school just before my 17th birthday. I always thought that someday someone would figure out that they were paying me to do my favorite hobby. Proud mamma. Where in the hospital do you work?
