I have gained 1.4 pounds in the last two weeks since I last checked in. I am not pleased to have gained. As always it could have been so much better and it could have been so much worse.

What I am most concerned about is the slow inexorable upwards trend of my weight. In October I was 10 pounds less than I am today. This is not the direction I had in mind.

I know that the two most important aspects to weight loss is to eat less than I use (calorie deficit) and to maintain a mind set that makes that possible and sustainable.

Recently my mindset has been slipping where I am letting this little thing slide and that little thing slide. It has become a habit. I plan to spend time this week considering how to take hold of my mind set simply because I know that is where everything starts!

This past two weeks have been full. I visited with my long time friend who lives 10 hours away. She is facing Alzheimer's. Followed by a 4 day meditation and yoga retreat. Before coming home I visited with another friend who was 2 hours from the retreat. The drive home was 10 hours this past Monday. It was hot(!!) and I had no air conditioning) After getting home there were a myraid of items that I needed to attend to that came up in my absence, a number of volunteer meetings to attend, some volunteering and last night 'welcoming back' my daughter and sister from their 4 day fast (no food or water) Vision Quest.

The dust has settled and I am down 0.2 pounds. Doesn't sound like much however this was a difficult week weight wise. At one point I was up 1.8 pounds and hung in that vicinity for a number of days. I had two particulary calorie high days and ended up averaging over the week 150 calories extra per day over my calorie window. These last two days were the only ones where I dipped below last week's weigh in. Perhaps having 5 days in the window and two extremely high days allowed for the loss - I really don't know!

This week was busy with five 'town' days due to having to accomodate particular business people. And today will be six! Keeping in mind that my aim is one town day per week! Town days are problematic as I have given myself permission in the past to loosen up on calories on this day and so I am in the habit of seeing a town day as a 'looser' day than home days. Five-six days of 'loosening' up is not conducive to weight loss!

I am going on a retreat next week I will be leaving Wednesday morning and returning Monday night. That means I will miss my weigh in next Saturday. The retreat part should be good for meal choices, it will be the two travel days and spending time with friends on either end of the retreat that may drive the calories upwards.

I am up by 0.8 pounds. I am a little bit surprised. I believe that I have been eating within my calorie window and yet each day I have gained a little bit more. I had one day of high calories and two days of a bit over and the other 4 days have been in the window. Over all I am about 15 calories per day over. I would have expected to be the same weight or a very small loss. I did not expect it to be a gain.

All I can think is that somehow I am not calculating my calories correctly. I am still mostly weighing everything with a few exceptions. I am thinking I will need to have no exceptions until I get a handle on this.

This week the most exciting stuff has been moving my father in law's estate along. I did his probate myself and the Courts have accepted my work so no lawyer fee on this. I have taken his paperwork to the accountant so that is in the works as well.I continue to pick away at cleaaring his home. This is going quite slowly but it is picking up momentum.

Yuck - I hate checking in with a large gain! 2.4 gain. Last week I lost 2.6 pounds. Disappointing but not shocking. I have been eating more calories per day plus some of the record keeping is suspect as I was doing a great deal of guessing which usually means that the guesses are lower than reality!

This week, I have plans that will reverse this trend. There is some meal planning and less being gone at meal time. Guess I will see next Saturday.

Yesterday, my granddaughter turned 18. In Canada that means she is officially an adult. She is off to university next September. Growing up. We met as a family for Brunch. It is nice to get to have these get togethers.

Afterwards, I faced up to starting in on my father-in-law's house. This has to get properly started the sooner the better. If the dump is open today, then I will go back on Monday to get another load. I have no more room in my car if I can't off load it today!

This is an interesting weigh-in for me. When I was last on Fat Secret I weighed 0.6 pounds less than I do this morning. However the day I left for my two week trip to Mexico I was 3.2 pounds more than the last weigh in. I do find that I am looking at both numbers in assessing how things went.

I worked hard to not only enjoy the Mexican cuisine during my trip but to also remain cognizant of what I was ingesting calorie wise. I didn't want to 'miss out' on a traditional delicacy but I did not want to return to a 10-15 pound weight gain (perfectly plausible outcome as I have done it before!).

When I returned home I was 0.6 pounds less that the amount that I weighed when I left and 2.6 higher than the last logged in weight. Throughout this week I have returned to my routines and am pleased to say that I have dropped an additional 2 more pounds. Personally, I am calling this a win!

My trip to Mexico City wasn't the traditional trip that most of my Canadian friends embrace. There was no ocean and sand (but there was sun!). Mexico City is 12000 feet above sea level so it is cooler than the beach resorts. Highest temperature was 29C (85 F). What there was a lot of was amazing art - in public buildings, outside on roll shutters, in parks, in stores, etc. Truly wherever I looked I saw murals, pottery, textiles, sculptures! They were integrated throughout daily life as well as in museums. They generally make it free for people over 60 to access the museums (some exceptions). I saw lots of indigenous culture overlaying modern life. Music was everywhere and general population random people would kick up their heels and dance in the street! I found the people friendly and helpful despite my lack of Spanish and their limited to no English. You know you aren't in a tourist zone when the person manning the government tourist booth does not speak any English! I was fortunate to have a friend who was well versed (but with limited Spanish skills) in the area. We saw an active volcano and pyramids both an hour bus ride from Mexico City that I certainly wouldn't have seen without his knowledge of the area! My trip (minus the airfare) cost me about $2500 CAD including hotel, food, activities and souvenirs for 15 days. My guide is cost conscious so that certainly helped to keep the costs down. I would recommend this trip to everyone!
