An odd/interesting discussion going on in our team IM chat at work today. Started with one person saying she left her wallet at home today so she would save money on lunch, apparently she had her debit card. She didn't bring lunch, was hungry so hiked down to Chipotle.

I put a comment in that chat bringing lunch would be much cheaper ( I didn't get into healthier). Which in turn created comments about that would mean cooking and most team mates hated that idea. These are the same people who are complaining that they can't lose weight, keep gaining and run out of money before pay day. They go buy breakfast and lunch at quick places near our downtown office and from what they say get take out or heat up pre-prepared meals for dinner. One person this is how she feeds her children. They are young, overweight and are often sick.

I feel badly for them as to what their health will be like in the future. I see so many here in our office, with so many health problems that I'm certain would be less if they ate healthier foods.

It is very very challenging watching the very unhealthy habits of those you work or live with. Being sensitive and compassionate without just shaking them and screaming about their health risks can be so very hard. I feel you, I want everyone I know to be healthy and happy and watching their struggles with food hurts my heart.

WOW.. cant believe they feed their kids that way.. Its sad. I have a friend like that too, who they eat out a lot and are always broke. I love to eat out but I save it for special occasions or maybe just the weekend/ date night.. and hardly ever during the week unless its a really really bad bad day..It def involves a lot of work and planning but it so much more worth it to me.. eating out make me feel sluggish and gross.. I agree with gokona.. I have def resist the urge to shake em like a stubborn baby ( JOKE ) LOL..

I will admit that when I was dieting in earnest and working, I would look at all those fat people around me with their fries and shakes and be horribly judgmental. I am better now. My happy place while dieting was Panera or Perkins for fish, salad and veggies. Good to see how many places now list calories on the menu.

It took some time, but I was finally able to scope out a place downtown that makes wonderful salads and will tailor make them anyway their customers like. The irony is it's a pizza place! lol. I always tell Juan (one of the cooks) he's part of the reason I'm down 23.8 lbs. Choices and inclination play a part in this. I don't at all hold any condemnation for those that don't want or feel they have time to cook. But, then the exchange rate for that choice is making sure the options one is choosing wherever they opt to go are healthy if they want to actually lose weight and maintain decent health. There's no getting around that premise. And, the irony is if you break it down, it can take just as much time trying to find a healthy place to eat as it is to food prep or cook for oneself. Either way, it's not impossible to eat out and eat healthy, but it means taco bell is usually not an option, especially if someone is trying to get any nutritional value from their food.

Eberg, I've been on maint for like 3 years. I'm not very judgmental as everyone has their own way of eating. I simply feel badly that so many of the people I know don't take care of themselves by eating healthier foods and spending hard earned $$ on foods that will eventually lead to health problems. I've been a whole food nut since the early 70's so nothing new.

definitely changes your mindset. I watch my sister get heavier and heavier. She refuses to stop soda and logged once until she saw she was at 2000 calories without dinner. She is single again and off to the gym but without a "diet" change, she won't lose weight, get discouraged and stop working out. And the cycle continues. ..

Redgirl, sadly I think lots of people feed their kids that way. Egull, agreed you can eat healthy eating out but would you do it at the expense of not paying your bills? Sorry about your sis FloridaAngel. HCB, LOL, I use canned tomatoes, boxes of whole grain pasta, keep a couple bottles of organic salad dressing, pickles and a bunch of oriental things like miso, hoisin sauce and fermented bean curd etc. in my frig.

gokana, it can sometimes be hard. I keep quiet but wish they would learn and make some changes.

At work every day someone comes to me and says how are you loosing so much weight (I've lost over 30) and what are you doing. I spend forever telling them about Keto and then they say that's too much work for me, but my so and so is pre-diabetic. I want to scream do you want to keep them alive? Maybe you should put a little effort into it. I cook on Sat, 2/3 things and then eat them the rest of the week. This weekend I made zucchini brownies and cereal. Then they say, "you should bring some in for me to taste." UGH! Really, I should feed you when you're too lazy to feed yourself? Un-believable.

it chaps my hind when I see my closest grocery store reorganizing to put in yet more pre cooked ready-to-eat foodstuffs. If you can't do some cooking imo there's no way you can eat for health/basic nutrition. I remember a young coworker ( ready to join the armed forces mind you) state that her MD said they were prediabetic at age 20ish

Maeday, Whatever plan works for you it does take a little time and planning. I was also getting that when I was losing weight. It's too much work to cook. I still get that. One of our new team mates @ work is always trying to get me to give her my lunch!? I also try to cook ahead on weekends. I've gained a little partly due to not planning and not doing the pre cooking so on those stressed long work days I have easy meals instead of just grabbing what is avail.. I never buy frozen meals or anything similar. My very occasional take out is tamales from a small Mexican place that makes their own and a Mom/Pop Greek gyro shop that roasts their own lamb, buys locally made pita, and make the most delicious soup of the day. 859, I agree. I rarely shop the larger grocery stores as the aisle after aisle of junk, even the natural stores have a junk food section, but at least they have more good for you options than not. I love ethnic stores, though not organic, are packed with food, not much else. Course the ceiling of both my favorite Mexican stores are covered with colorful piñatas and the oriental shops have a section with cooking utensils, but not lots of junk or pre=prepared packaged food.

Bill, I think everyone needs to find their own way. I know I did after trying one thing after another that I lost and gained more back. Wake up call from the doc saying lose weight or knee replacement I had to find a way that worked for me that I could live with over time. Low carb was only making me sick. I just wish I could tell them to wake up before they have major health issues.
