wholefoodnut's Journal, 30 Jul 17

Sunday morning dawns with sparkling dew and a promise of a beautiful day. I need to get moving shortly and tackle my day.

I've been watching food documentaries often listening while doing inside chores. The amount of people who rely on take out and pre-prepared foods is incredible. It's no wonder there are so many food related diseases. It brings to my thinking those co-workers who say they don't cook. Most are young or at least much younger than I am and always seem to be sick. They are amazed that I cook for just me and usually skip the lunches provided when we work through lunch. They say my lunches smell amazing as I usually eat at my desk.

They say they don't have time to cook but spend hours on the computer or watching TV. For me cooking is relaxing, I may have the TV, music or simply quiet and enjoying the process of cooking. A Hindu premise is to concentrate on every task, do the best you can at it and each task will become enjoyable in itself. I think that translates into anything you do cooking, learning, building something, working on a hobby, exercise etc, etc.

I'm also re-reading a 1970's book 'Laurel's Kitchen". I pulled it out last night for a yummy lentil/nut "meat"loaf recipe and started reading the first half of the book which is an interesting journey through changes in several families way of eating the rest is a vegetarian cookbook.

Prep for this coming week won't take long as I have much to do. Sourdough whole grain bread is already made. Lentil/nut loaf, a soup with legumes, veggies and spelt, a tomato salad, and an adzuki bean spread for bread. Corn is in season here and I bought 3 ears yesterday so will stop for more from the farm store during the week.

Coffee cup is empty so time to move.

I remember work colleagues saying my homemade food smelt amazing. Love the Hindu idea and your prep for the coming week.

Fast food may be convenient, but far from healthy. Amazing how cheap they make it to keep us unfit and unhealthy.Sad that many fall into the trap,I used to be one of those. Bully for you ! You are amazing and an inspiration for me.

Horseshu1, I had that book when it first came out as well as the Diet for a Small Planet books they were lost in a flooded store room. I found it at 1/2 Price books a couple years ago. The lentil-nut loaf is so good-- it does IMO need a little more moisture though. Stopped in 1/2 Price books today while waiting for the natural food store to open in 20 min. I came home with Rodale Press's Stocking UP (I had loaned mine to a friend who lost it) for $2.00 in the clearance rack and another big book on vegetarian cooking that looks amazing.

Nice post WFN...also some of our nicest times are spent cooking meals for ourselves or guests working together...visiting, sharing, amazed at what we can produce for ourselves. Some of our BEST meals ever are at home or at friends homes.

Nice post! I enjoy cooking, and always cook for myself. Rarely do i eat at a fast food place, but have been known to grab a regular burger at Mickey-D's if i am on my way to an appointment, and haven't had time to eat first. Home-cooked meals taste so much better!

I really enjoy cooking both for myself and family and love watching food shows. Food is such an integral part of our social lives as humans snd such a part of our sharing of hospitality! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Making it with our love and our own two hands can't help but make it more special. I too worry about the fast food insistence on cooking yuk food and people consuming it. 🙇🏻‍♀️

Food well cooked at home tastes so good and is good for you. I totally agree that it is so much a part of our lives. My girls grew up mostly in the kitchen. I don't remember not cooking so it is hard for me to understand those who have no idea how. I worry about the health of some I see eating so badly. Even fast food isn't so cheap anymore except for a few items. The soup I made yesterday cost maybe $5.00 a little time, and is chock full of legumes, spelt, veggies and has I'm guessing about 15 good sized bowls. Complete protein and lots of veggies, tastes wonderful, will be filling, and next time I will half the recipe. Will be easy to take to work, heat up in the microwave for lunch. I can't afford fast food. In a pinch when I'm out somewhere and my blood sugar drops too low if I have no other choice I will grab a fast food sandwich (value menu). I regret it later as I end up with an awful stomach ache. There are often other options that I think about later.
