CALCULATING FOOD CALORIES IN THE HEAD

Sometimes calculating food calories and how much we actually eat can be challenging,...especially when one is "on the fly". Generally, I eat 2 TSP of pumpkin seeds in the morning while exercising. One tsp is eaten before exercise, and the other after. It's just a relatively "cheap" snack (calorie wise), and frankly I love them. So, Monday before I went to the golf course, I found there were no Pure Protein chocolate shakes in the house. A banana and a Nature Valley Bar are also eaten for lunch while playing golf. The FS chart shows Kroger salted pumpkin seeds are 160 calories for 1/3 cup. So, 1 cup = 480 calories, and since there are 48 teaspoons in a cup, then 1 tsp = 10 calories. When converting to the FS table, 2 tsp of pumpkin seeds equates to 1/8 of 1/3 cup. BUT, in my sleepy state yesterday AM, I converted 2 tsp to equate to 1/8 of a cup, and not 1/8 of 1/3 cup. Got that ?? I loaded my ziplock bag with 4 of the 1/8 cups of pumpkin seeds. That is not 80 calories, but 240 calories. While waiting on someone to take their turn hitting the golf ball, I was munching on some pumpkin seeds. It dawned on me there was a strong possibility a miscalculation had been made, and that I had eaten 160 more calories in pumpkin seeds than I should have. Yep, sure had, but well worth it because the hunger pangs were strong. Back on the straight path today.

BTW, thank all of you for the prayers that were offered on behalf of Xander.

Everyone have a great Tuesday, and please don't miscalculate those calories !! God is good.

I have problems with this sometimes too.

I just started eating pumpkin seeds after discovering all of the health benefits it has. It's so ironic that you made a post about it, even though you're referring to counting your calories. Thanks for sharing.

Swayneman, at one time I ate sunflower seeds, and still do on salads,..occasionally. However, after discovering the roasted & salted pumpkin seeds, I eat them as one of my preferred snacks. To me, they have a much better taste than sunflower seeds.

That's interesting. I transitioned from roasted peanuts to pumpkin seeds. I still crave roasted peanuts from time to time, but I do love the taste of pumpkin seeds as well.

MorticiaAddams, it is a daily issue with me. Example,..there are 3 tsp in 1 tbsp, but,...4 tbsp in a 1/4 cup. Why not 4 tsp (just a little smaller). I know the reasoning (5 ml in a tsp and 15 ml in a tbsp), but my mind just doesn't compute like that. It took me so long to remember, with certainty, that it is 3 tsp in 1 tbsp. The same is true converting liters and quarts, etc... I have changed over to grams in calculating weights for foods when available, just because of the accuracy versus ounces. As a former accountant, I can deal with the numbers, but the differences boggle my mind. :)

I never thought of having pumpkin seeds for a snack. I'll have to put them on my list.

Well in my book what ever you logged it as is how many calories it is…🤪😅jk! I’ve done that before and it’s frustrating but you’ll recover!😊

I hated 'fractions' in elementary school and thought arithmetic was a waste of time but these little suckers are sure handy when logging portions and calories eh! And like you, Biomici, I am finding grams to be my favored way to weigh anyway. (Sorry, couldn't help myself).

Grams are the way to go when you are at home and in control of how to measure. I make my own snack packs of nuts, Picksweet roasted edamame and roasted garbonzo beans for when I’m home or when I travel. When I’m out I’m pretty good at eyeballing, but I’m also not super hardcore. I’m not into driving myself nuts. I’m on the site to track my nutrition and to keep from developing a weight issue from mindless eating.

Gopherit2, my dislike of math is why I became and accountant & auditor. As an accountant, 1 + 1 always = 2. In higher math, 1 + 1 could equal 1, or -8124, the square root of a tree, or maybe the color yellow. Yes, I like weighing food in grams,...just not me !!

Bionici, Yesssss! Have you ever tried to help a little kid with math in the past few years?

Gopherit2, thankfully I have not had the pleasure of tutoring a child in math the past few years. My 2 grew up, 2 of my granddaughters grew up, and my 2 other granddaughters have a father who has higher degrees in math and music. He is so much more qualified than me. Once they determine to be accountants, then maybe we'll talk. :)

Gopherit2– I did help a little kid with their math— what an eye opener. I could look at the problem and see the answer in my head and it was a cinch to do using old school math but trying to worked it in the new math era was a mess. It didn’t even make sense. It seems that they are making it far more complicated than it needs to be. No wonder kids are struggling.

Weigh your portions in grams. So easy.

Kenna, I struggled all through school with math. I could figure out the answer but couldn't 'prove' it so got no credit for the correct answer. And I couldn't explain verbally how I figured it out!

Math vs medication manufacturing: Do you suppose that 'retiring' trusted old (inexpensive) meds and new math might be because there is more money in new meds and new twxtbooks? Cynical I am.

Gopherlt2– no that is not the issue at all. They don’t discard or retire meds without a good reason
