WEGOVY/OZEMPIC & SEDATION/ANESTHESIA COMPLICATIONS

I came across this in one of my many health emails I subscribe to and felt this is worthy to share for those of you who are using Wegovy or Ozempic for weight loss and/or diabetes.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists have issued a guidance advising patients to skip daily weight-loss medications on the day of surgery and hold off on weekly injections for a week before any sedation procedures. In the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia they call for the drug to be stopped for even longer - about three weeks before sedation.

Why? Because anesthesiologists in both the US and Canada are seeing growing numbers of patients on the weight-loss drugs who have inhaled food/liquid into their lungs while sedated because their stomachs were still full, even after following the standard instructions to stop eating for whatever timeframe they had been prescribed to have the sedation/surgery. It's called Pulmonary Aspiration and it can cause a lot of stuff you really, really don't want to have to go through.

Just keeping it real and giving you the information you may need one day ;)
