BuffyBear's Journal, 17 May 15

THE END GAME: Read a man's Journal yesterday about failing to reach his desired weight due to not having an "end game". He got my attention quicker than if he had thrown a bucket of ice water in my face.

At one point I had lost 57 pounds, but instead of continuing on to my goal I lost focus and started gaining back. I had no end game. Why? My goals were so fuzzy that I had no real vision of the finish line, let alone a battle plan of how to get there.

Maybe one reason I'm having this problem is that I'm viewing my goal as a meaningless number picked off a random weight chart. I need to start targeting a vision with real meaning to me - something worth fighting for to the bitter end.

How do you envision your goals?

Foxxanne - That would be great advice for some. But unfortunately, I have so many outfits (some of them never worn) in 1-2 sizes too small I don't believe I'll ever need any more clothes!

LindaLee - Never thought to do that! Maybe for me Post-It notes would work better. I could stick them up in appropriate places and then switch them out for fresh motivation. Thanks!

Buffy, no pain is a real goal!! It does not matter what plan that works for you. It is amazing not to live on pain killers, even if they are over the counter. I know you can do this!!!

Draglist - You have been through a lot of changes these past few weeks. I'm sure your life will get back to normal soon and you'll be back to a one-tier plan.

I love goal setting....but I've found that I need to set a few 'interim' goals to keep me from focusing on 'just the end game'. I am 7 pounds away from my first personal goal and can definitely feel that is within reach. I am also focusing more on 'how I feel', which is great....as long as I stay on-track and journal what I eat. I also find it's helpful to visualize a goal....so I've dusted off my favorite photo from years past (needless to say, I was thinner and healthier at that time).

Pollykuz - Asking how one feels is a great strategy. I start feeling better so gradually that I think I forget to connect it to my eating better. As for photos - worth a 1,000 words!

Wholefoodnut - You've got me thinking more and more about being able to move without pain. I'm carrying around 30 extra pounds. No wonder my back aches.

Buffy, it has made a huge, huge difference. Make no pain a goal. I had no idea when I started this journey what a difference it would make!! As I have repeatedly said, my cane hangs on my shower rod as a daily reminder to stay on track!!! It is my goal not to use it ever again, unless I sprain an ankle, hoping that will not happen. My back still has occasional issues but the stronger my abs get the fewer those bouts become.

Best thing I've read all day. That's the ticket! That's the way its done! No GOAL -- no drive -- victory delayed...

For me, my next goal (320) is just another step toward my TWIN long term goals of Improved health and better quality of life...Actually, I think better quality of life includes "improved health"...so I will re-evaluate when I get to 240 and consider going lower...but if I have any difficulty at all maintaining 240 AND if I can then walk a 15 minute mile AND walk 4 miles in an hour...I will NOT obsess about going ANY lower...in fact, if I can meet my walking goals and I only get to 250, I will NOT consider myself a failure by any means. Thanks BB, for a VERY helpful journal post, AND thanks to ALL who contributed. Y'all have a week filled with Healthy choices AND affirming people!!!!

PS: I do think it is JUST as important to MAINTAIN whatever my "End Game" Goal weight is, as it is to actually get there!!!! :) Thanks for listening!!!!

Buffy, pick up something that weighs 30 pounds and carry it around for awhile. I lost 60 and have trouble carrying a 40 pound bag of compost very far. Thank goodness for wheelbarrows!

A good question, BuffyBear. My goal is and will always be to be healthy once I hit my 60s. I am 58 now. It seems it has taken me several years of not taking care of myself that I realized being healthy was going to be a lifestyle change. I have 150 to lose. Wrapping myself in MORE bad eating habits ( as in a fad diet) was not going to address my issues. My end goal is a healthier me and and weight lost.

The problem with my End Game has been that my ultimate goal is unrealistic. It is unrealistic to think that you are ever going to be where you were 30 or 40 years ago. For some of you, maybe you don't want to be where you were 30 or 40 years ago. Anyway, if you are in the "Golden Years", there has been some settling of contents. You may not even like yourself if you weigh as little as you think you ought to. I'm starting to re-evaluate in terms of what is a "healthy" weight. I'm never going to look good in a speedo!

DK. I'm 65 I never will look like I did at 30. Course I was too skinny then @ 95 pounds. I was in shape though. I still want to be at a healthy weight, little pain, and as toned and in as good of shape as I can be. I still have a long ways to go on the fitness part but am better than I was a year ago.

Buffybear, you are so right that some of us may not be happy when we reach our goal weight. In fact, when I was on Weight Watchers, they used to warn about not recognizing ourselves (not feeling comfortable in your new skin) when you lose weight. You see, for many of us, it has been so long since we felt 'normal' that it can be a shock for someone to say, 'you are getting too thin'. The bottom line is, YOU must feel comfortable with whatever goal you set. This thread of comments has been really though provoking. Thanks for everyone who shared, I learned so much.

DK, I will never look like I did when I met my dear husband, 22 years ago.....but, I'd like to have close to that stamina! I have a feeling that, if I could get to the same weight as I had then, I might be too gaunt....so I will just play it by ear and see where I go. My ultimate goal is the best I can be (at my age).
