dbdmom's Journal, 16 Apr 15

I tell you what, hearing someone comment about my weight loss ain't ever gonna get old! The after-school caregiver where my youngest two go to school said something to me this afternoon. When I walked in, she said something about me losing a lot of weight. "What are you doing?" (Funny, I'm noticing that I'm getting that question a LOT when people comment about my weight loss.) I just said, "I'm not eating as much as I used to!" Which is true!

But the best comment I've received in the last month or so came from my husband. Now, I've been on this weight-loss trip before. And, as nice and as wonderful as my DH is, I must say that he's never been particularly *helpful* or super-supportive of me in my efforts. I don't mean that he tries to sabotage my efforts. And it isn't that he is mean or has *ever* said anything about my "fluffiness" that has piled on since we were married 21 years ago. I just don't think he knows *how* to encourage me. Maybe I need to figure out what that would look like and sound like and ask him to do; maybe that would help.

My frustration has been that, if I'm ever discussing dietary changes or what I'm doing, he will (instead of nodding and just saying, "you're right, you're so right"), he will talk about what he thinks he knows about. Which doesn't always apply to me, my specific health needs, or what works for me and what doesn't work for me.

He'll say, "I think the most important thing is moderation." "I think that air conditioning is the reason people are overweight these days." "I was so busy at work yesterday, I missed lunch; I think I lost 5 lbs."

So, it's kind of sad that I have resigned myself to the fact that...I just don't discuss my daily and by-meal successes or challenges with him. It's easier if I don't start the conversation, because (poor guy), I'll just end up getting mad at him by something he'll say. Anyway, I was just thinking to myself the other day, "Gee, self. I haven't been this weight, oh, in YEARS. Like, at least 2 or 3 pregnancies ago. And people are noticing. Sigh. Sure would be nice if my *husband* would notice. And say something."

And then, it happened. He has noticed. His comment was short, brief, and to the point, but he's a man of few words. He just gave me a totally unsolicited comment, "I can tell that you've really lost weight."

Yes. Yes, I have. Thank you for noticing and acknowledging my efforts, DH! :)

Still hanging at 164.5, but I know my fruity scale only moves in 2-3 lb. increments, all at once. But I think I can do this! I'm just gonna keep on keepin' on.

My hubby will cook foods for my diet because he won't eat what I eat. He supports me that way. He will not say I look thinner, I look nicer--or any type of compliment, unless someone else says something and they say--don't you think so? When he gets mad at me, the first thing he attacks is my weight--calling me fat or "tubby." The last time I had lost a lot of weight--I was down to a size six and he still called me "fat and tubby"--and they were the nice compliments he said to me when he was mad. I knew, then that it wasn't my weight because being a size six, I wasn't fat or tubby. He was big in the belly and put on a lot of weight. Seriously, though he is absolutely fantastic in supporting me. He cooks special meals, has advice, goes out of his way to make sure things have flavor, but are "okay" calorie wise. I think if there were one thing I could get him to change, it would be for him to walk with me.

Super! It is great when other people notice. I was going to ask if you were on a specific diet plan. My husband is the same way. I just don't think they know how to respond. My husband has a fast metabolism and can sit around eating brownies and anything else he wants and not gain an ounce. So irritating to me! Lol. Keep up the good work!

Arroden--I am basically watching my calories. I write down everything I eat. During Lent, I restricted my calories to 1200 per day, except Sundays. On Sundays, I would eat whatever I wanted. Since Lent, I am not as restrictive, but shoot for around 1400 calories per day, which is supposed to be enough to keep losing. I still plan at least one cheat day per week. I have quit drinking diet sodas. Now, I drink herbal or black tea, and use a little stevia. I pack my breakfast and lunch everyday now. Breakfast for me is either 1/2 cup of 1% cottage cheese and some blueberries or kiwi. Or, a couple of boiled eggs, no yolks, with some red pepper hummus. Lunch--I eat a Joseph's lavash instead of bread and put in some lean deli meat, some red bell pepper slices, maybe some low fat cheese, horseradish, maybe some avocado if I have it, and roll it up. I usually have a side of pickles and grape tomatoes. Dinner is whatever I am feeding my family minus any bread and making sure I have small portions. I am oretty careful with my intake for breakfast, lunch and dinner so that I have calories available for snacking, which is important to my mental and emotional well-being!!!

I am so encouraged by your weight loss! I saw your weight chart yesterday. How inspiring! I have been trying to lose weight for about the last 10 yrs. I've never lost all the weight I want to. I lose and then gain and I lose again. I've also had several babies within that time frame. I was thinking how much healthier I can be in 2 months if I just stick with it. I know you know how it is with kids. I try not to eat carbs when I make meals for the family, but those potatoes get me every time! Mind over matter I guess. Thanks for the info on your diet. That helps a lot. I can't seem to get by on 1200 calories a day, but most days I stay under 1400. I too try to keep portions down at lunch and dinner cause snacks are important to me. I usually have 2 eggs for breakfast and coffee with milk. I have steel cut oats with 1 tbsp. peanut butter for midmorning snack and the rest of the day I don't feel too hungry, so it definitely helps me eat lighter for lunch and dinner. You're doing great! Keep it up!
