p$m's Journal, 07 Nov 22

Happy July in November... cause it freakin warm here in NY. I'm wearing a sweater in 74 degree weather because I've put all my warm weather clothing away already. Thankfully the office is cold with the AC blowing.

I went to the dr last week. My cholesterol is up again so I need to add oatmeal to my diet. It helped last time so hopefully it will help again. I never had the cholesterol problem before since I didn't eat meat. But now I've been eating more of it and I guess my ice cream addiction isn't the best for my cholesterol either. I know part of this issue is due to genetics. Mom and Dad have high cholesterol so...

Hopefully the change in my diet to keep my cholesterol down will help me drop some weight... sometimes (sadly) it takes a health problem to keep me on track.

Have a great week and dont forget to vote!

Psyllium husk (as Metamucil or my own blend of husk and flavoring) worked wonders for my cholesterol and shedding pounds. Best of luck getting your numbers where you want ‘em.

I had the cholesterol bump, too, and documented its glory and defeat for anyone curious. I went from vegetarian to vegan, ditching dairy and my beloved cheese. Worked like a charm. At least you caught it early before the doctor threatened you with Statins.

Wow! I live in desert and it was 54 degrees yesterday, 45 at night... High cholesterol is a challenge for sure! I see lots of good suggestions, I hope they work for you! 💜💜💜

@livin : now does that ice cream taste good? I’m a serious gelato girl but also love my kulfi. I’m a sucker for creaminess!

@otb the leaves by me only 30% down. I spent an hour cleaning up the sidewalk only since it’s a waste to do the yard with so much more to fall. It’s just a wonder how many leaves one tree could drop.

@Moe thanks. I like the Metamucil wafers. I will definitely try it.

@bananas 😯 I can’t give up dairy and hope I don’t have to. I love cheese, ice cream, etc… meat is easier to let go. I’m not a big fan. Just get the occasional craving. Besides what kind of NYer would I be with a cheeseless pizza! Lollll

Your folk’s higher cholesterol likely is not a medical generational thing. How is THEIR diet and their activity level.

My mom was 5'5" and 115#. She started monitoring her cholesterol in the 1960s. She was a Home Economics teacher, and taught nutrition. In the early stages of cholesterol medication, (nasty powder mixed with water) she eliminated all of the fat that she could from her diet without going vegan. Her total cholesterol was still over 450. With statin meds she lived to almost 98 when covid took her. No medicine is without risk neither is breathing but sometimes you must choose the lesser of the evils.

@P$M: when you say your cholesterol is "up," by that do you mean it's 205, or do you mean it's 300? Assuming you don't smoke and your cheese, red meat and ice cream intake is only a couple servings per week, a small fix like eating oatmeal implies that your LDL & Total levels are nothing close to requiring statins.

SLYONE 22– were your mom’s people of Northern European ancestry, particularly the Scandinavian countries. If so, it could be a genetic issue. Lucky for you you can get some information from your folks regarding ancestry and then talk to your doc and ask for a genetic test for familial hyper cholesterol. If your folks are deceased, did they die of heart disease, stroke. Often people with a familial issue die quite young of strokes, heart problems, etc. but 450 is pretty high.

@morticia thanks. Update I got a cal from my dr cause he treated my blood work since we were talking about results from May. He said my cholesterol is normal. He said maybe I made a change or it was a lab mistake. My dad said maybe it’s what I are the days before can give high readings. Either way I’m happy it’s down. I didn’t want to have to start meds. The statin are hard on the liver.

@kenna I don’t understand what you mean by medial generational

@slone I think my parents were the same. There was a certain point where the exercises and diet didn’t help and they went in medicine. I just want to avoid the meds as much as possible if I can make the adjustments.
