Happy May Monday... I saw that but feel *meh* This is more an emotional *meh* than a physical one. I do physically feel better from being sick for a week. My appetite is back so I'm starting to gain again. Hopefully I can stop that and take advantage of the loss from being sick.

Previously everyone said to maybe take a diet break. So being sick made me have that break. It's weird is I noticed while I started to feel better I found I started picking on food more to have a sense of "doing" if that makes sense. It was like part of my to do list. Breakfast, snack, lunch, etc... It was like I was trying to get through my whole days meal and complete it ever before it was dinner time. I really need to figure out what my brain is doing mental with food. I think there really is something more than just me over eating.

Every time I feel the desire to eat (in the absence of legitimate physical hunger) I always try to dissect the situation: am I bored? Am I upset/angry/ agitated? Am I tired/fatigued? Am I lonely? The thing about eating is it signals a cascade of feel-good chemicals, so anyone of these feelings can be misinterpreted as “hunger”, producing the desire to eat - but what you’re really craving is the release of the happy molecules (serotonin mostly, with a little sprinkle of dopamine.) This is an especially hard habit to break (using food to fulfill non-physical hungers) because the reward (happy molecules) are SO powerful. It can be done, but it takes time (it took me about 3 years). Food for thought. This community will support you no matter what

@allegra I also do that. Consider why I want to eat but honestly in the end something overcomes me and I eat anyway even after I know I’m not hungry. It’s that thing in need to get control over.

Food is a nice stimulant that I overuse at times. I think for me exercise is one of the things that help and of course dealing with the root problem but htat is not always that easy or quick

I understand that all too well. Food provides instant gratification and release! Understanding the process (cue/behavior/reward) is what helped me get a better handle on it, but every person is different.

@liv I think for me it’s a sense of doing. I can’t sit still so when I have nothing to do I eat/ nibble here nibble there to have a sense of doing without really doing anything. It’s weird I know. I just gotta figure out how to change that.

Glad you have fully recovered. I am sure you have heard it many times before. It takes a lifestyle change to make a permanent change. For me, it took an off the chart lab work result, and the Dr. urgent note to loose weight or else (on med) as a wake-up call for me to seriously focus in my health. Nowadays, I spend more time to plan my daily, and weekly meals than eating. You can definitely reach your goal, one meal at a time 👍.

@Just. Thank you. Yes I agree it is a lifestyle change. And admit I had it for a long time then something happened. I don’t know what but after I hit 50 I just started eating more and poorly. I also caught myself losing weight last year then like challenge my weight loss by eating to see what would make it go up. I didn’t do it on purpose but it was a thought in the back of my mind. I lost 10-15 pounds and was very good with my diet then I’d eat something unhealthy or more than I should and notice no gain so I’d do it again. It was like I self sabotage. ((😏))

I hear you. I "treat" myself once in a while just to see if I still enjoy eating. Yup. Budget your calories daily and weekly. And leave room for "treat", so you don't feel like you're depriving yourself.
