p$m's Journal, 24 Jan 22

Hi FS family,

Trying to stay on track which means I check in at least once a week. I realized venting here rather than just logging in food and weight helps me more than I thought. So here again.

Today, I have my bi-annual dr. appointment. I admit I'm a little nervous. Last time he said my cholesterol was a bit high. I know part of the cholesterol issue is I've been trying to add protein and started eating cheese and meat. Since I'm not a meat fan unless it's the bad meat (fried, salty, etc...), I was eating cheese a lot. I was on a little hamburger and beef patty binge for the last 2 months (eating one or half of one everyday) then realized I had this appointment and cut it out. I've been eating oatmeal for about 2 weeks because I heard it helps, but I got oatmeal-ed out. Ugh.. and I love oatmeal. Weird is when I eat it because I have to, it kind of loses its yumminess. Fingers crossed my cholesterol is ok. I really don't want to be on medication.

Oh yes, and I've tried some nuts (I'm allergic to most) but my Dr doesn't care about good or bad cholesterol. He told me high is high.

There's a lot of misinformation and controversy about cholesterol. Books on it! But you can understand the issues from watching some YouTube interviews with doctors. Medical opinion has shifted and a lot of practicing physicians have not kept up (because the drug companies are making a lot of money off the old ways.) Don't let the doc put you on meds without educating yourself first.

No need to be afraid of a low dose of a statin (20 mg) if it keeps you out of the danger range. However, still need to eat carefully and walk whenever you get a chance. Cheese can be a big contributor to cholesterol although some in moderation might jazz up a rather plain chicken breast or lean beef patty!

@erika - I’m not a fan of meds. I would prefer to change my eating habits. Weird when it comes to health I can change eating habits but when it comes to weight loss it’s more difficult

@Y yeah meds would be my last resort. My mom had a stroke and not from a blood clot but related to cholesterol so I will do what I have to in the end.
