jengetfit123's Journal, 13 Jun 21

I have been having some deep thoughts about my life and weight loss lately. Two things I wanted to share:

1) I have decided, after 20 years of yo-yo weight loss, to increase my goal weight by 25#. I don't know if, at age 55, I am conceding defeat, or if I am just maturing and getting real. The last I saw 125 was for about a minute in 2005.

If I could get down to 150#, I would still be pretty overweight (I am only 5'2"), but it would be an 80# loss, so much better for my health if maintained, and I would be able to wear so many of my beautiful clothes. (I have a real thing for beautiful clothes, and so many new that i have never worn. It's part of my crazy.)

I just don't see weighing in the 120s again, and I don't know if I would even be comfortable being that thin again. And honestly, I have broadened my idea of what I think is beautiful and sexy over the last 20 years, for me and others.

2) Speaking of sauces, even though both are easy peasy, ever since I learned to make Thai peanut sauce (last year) and red enchilada sauce (this year), I feel like I have been granted superhuman powers! I am no longer beholden to carry-out or store-bought, like mere mortals! BWAHAHAHA!

Jenn make your goal something you can actually imagine achieving. Time enough to assess after reaching that goal if you want to maintain or if you want to do it in the 5 pound increments Wifey suggested. For now focus on what you see is as attainable.

Jenn, as I was reading your post, I thought someone was writing about me. At 55 years and 5ā€™2, as well, it has been a drag trying to get the weight off (for good)! I too strive to be at a weight that is unreachable, however the will is always there. I stand with you! I want to wear my sexy dress and feel fabulous!

I understand what you are saying about the upping the goal weight, I did it. I am 67 years old and feel like just a few more pounds and then maintain. When I am well, I am active and able to burn more calories, I feel good health wise (except my lumbar spine) but other than that, the weight loss of over 40 lbs has lowered all my numbers, BP, glucose, A1C etc. Doctor is happy, so am I! Good luck with your decision, God bless!

5'2" , very small bone structure and at my most I weighed 162 pounds. I felt like a blimp and had very low self esteem. In my 20's and 30's I weighed 125 even after having babies. I am soon to be 67 and started a low carb diet about 5 years ago. As you can see from my photo I have lost all of that weight and have maintained it for about 3 years now. Slow and steady. I indulge every once in awhile and don't feel guilty. It was a major accomplishment for me and I feel much better, my health has improved significantly and I think I may have another 20 years in this 4th quarter of my life. Slow and steady .

I think it's good to reevaluate and if you're healthy at 150lbs, it might not be worth it to try to go lower if you find the required regimen (be it cutting calories, being more active, some combination thereof) unsustainable. I'm toying with going lower than around 120, but I'm already healthy, so if it doesn't happen, I'm not going to force it.

It is not defeatist to set a realistic goal that doesn't require extreme behavior or restrictions and at which you are healthy. I've adjusted my goal weight several times, but only after seeing the weight trend down and stay there for weeks with a lifestyle I found easy to sustain.

My goal is nowhere where charts say I should be. I would like to be 160 with an ultimate goal of 150. I just want to be healthier because I was eating my way to diabetes- and I am going to be a grandma for the first time! I am 5ā€™2ā€ as well, and before I had my son (age 18) I was 140 pounds and looked great. My doctor does not want me to aim for less than that with my frame and said to ignore BMI charts. I made it down to 150 pounds 5-6 years ago and that was perfect, but life happened and I fell off the wagon, so Iā€™m trying again!

I am 5'4" and for the past 10 years or so my thinner weight was 155 to 160. My initial goal when I started my most recent endeavor to lose in July 2019 was 155. When I achieved that I decided I should aim for another 10 lbs. & shoot for 145. I achieved that goal & have maintained between 140 & 145 for 15 months. My thinnest weight I remember was 125 lbs. in my early 20's. Jenn, I think you should aim for your 160 goal. When you've achieved that, you can decide how you feel about the way you look & how you feel. At 65, I think personally, if I lost 20 more lbs. it would make me look older. I don't feel fat & I'm healthy. Maintaining isn't too difficult because I can have meals & treats a bit higher in calories some days as long as I balance them with lower cal days. I also try to incorporate exercise & activity into my daily routine.

I use the 16 hour fast concept to supplement my dieting efforts. I do not eat anything between 6pm and 10am. I try to sleep 8 hours a day and walk when I can. I am not worried so much about my weight as I am about my BMI.

I also wanted to add a quote I saw recently, because your post made me think of it: "Getting extremely lean is awesome. You get: 1. Nice abs 2. Chiseled jaw line 3. Irritability and hunger 4. Low testosterone/erectile issues 5. Loss of period/fertility issues" (Dr. Spencer Nadolsky) Some people are not meant to be very lean without compromising their health. It's actually pretty common for women who get too lean to lose their period and have to work to balance their hormones and reach a state of health again. Personally, I don't value leanness over health, and it sounds like that's your perspective too.

I think this is a good thing. Focusing on being healthier is better for your longevity than focusing on a pant size!
