You don’t know exactly what you burn. They are all estimates. So many things go into our metabolism. Genetics. Hormones. Amount you exert yourself doing the same exercise as someone else. So you are obviously burning more than you thought. Cool.

Your metabolism's efficiency is not constant but varies due to many factors - stress, sleep, activity, when/what you eat. And kim is correct in saying that calculations are normalized estimates.

I assumed my Apple Watch and health app would be a close estimate. It was when I was losing weight intentionally. But not now it seems. I don’t know if it’s underestimating my bmr or my activity. I’m a fairy sedentary person. Gym 3x a week most weeks, garden is about done so not collecting or weeding as much, find time to read or play spades about two hours a day or more. Sit in the truck hauling my kids to all their activities and sitting watching them....

Perhaps it’s because I’ve been eating broccoli more? Or I’ve been eating a lot of cheese lately. Always did eat a lot of meat. All macros have stayed about the same so I can’t pinpoint anything there. Only things really different is the heat (95-100 most days), upped my water in take and I haven’t been sleeping well for weeks. Water should help get rid of the excess but sleeping should make me hold on to more weight. I’ll take it no matter what it is lol.

It is hard to understand! I eat a lot! I partly wish I could be like those people who eat 1200 calories a day, I would save money! One day I tried to eat 1800 calories and I ended up eating 2200 at least! I weigh between 101 and 103. My calorie burn is often around 2000 more or less. Needless to say I rarely count calories because it stresses me too much!

I would think anyone would be in a deficit at 1700 calories unless you're comatose, hehe

Deficit at 1700 kcal? You’re funny! Maybe if I was a man or had more muscle. Hubby thought I could eat 2600 kcal when I asked him last night what he thought my daily burn was lol. Wish it was that high! Ok no. I wish it was 2000. But I’m finding 1700 is about right on a daily basis. Let’s me have the high and low days and eat what I want when I want mostly.

I had a generic Fitbit but it only counted steps distance and burn based on those. I’m ok with the Apple Watch being off as long as it ends up consistent. Then I can always just add 100-200 to the burn to know it’s alright. I’ll check out some online calculators again and see if they agree with the watch or not. Perhaps I’ll steal my daughters Fitbit for a week. She’s not using it anyway.

But you lost 4 pounds so it sounds like 1700 is a deficit. That loss puts you at over 2k for maintenance. 2166 to be exact.

Maybe you moved a little more on average this month raising your burn.

Hey Diablo - how did you calculate 2166? Just interested in the math. Thx!

Thx chrisw77! Can always count on you for the math. 🤔➕➖✖️➗👍👍

I’m a little too scared to try for an average of 2000-2100 lol. I gained 10# in 7 months a couple years ago without realizing it. (Before FatSecret) Maybe I’ll try to up it to an average of 1800-1900. My plan was 1800-2000 but that’s harder to do than I’d thought. Easy when eating out but not so easy when I cook at home. Just can’t eat as much in one sitting as I used to be able to.

Yeah, with a deficit I would but not a surplus since it's much easier to gain fat than muscle. Well, not for me but most mortals. 😁

Lol, see my last journal entry. Muscle didn't come easy for me either. Been at this since 99'. I deserve to make these kind of jokes now, haha.
