59Carol's Journal, 18 Apr 20

I am feeling very ripped off. Taking some deep breaths around this mornings weigh in. I gained 1.2 pounds. I honestly don't know why. Throughout the week my weight stayed stubbornly up despite what I was eating. I kept telling myself that the scale must come down as I know what I am doing. I also had ham for two meals earlier in the week so I thought maybe it was the salt content. In the end, today's weigh-in is an exact reflection of my all my morning daily weigh-ins. When I average them, they are what I weighed in at this morning.

The numbers.... I averaged the week's calorie intake and am inside the window that I aim at. Three out of seven days were above the window but never above by more than 50 calories. I was under the window two days at no more than 30 calories below. And in the window for two days. That should have lead to at least a 1 pound loss.

My daily morning exercise stayed steady at an hour a day. I did not get outside for the cardio piece very much. However, I do know that exercise, although an important health component, is not a deciding factor as far as the scale goes.

What am I left with? I will re-double my efforts on paying attention to the licks, snicks and other types of 'sneaky' calories. Make sure that I am not 'fooling' myself. The numbers generally do not lie therefore I may not be accounting for some.

I remain 6 pounds above my lowest weight. I will persevere!

This week my out of the ordinary is that I adopted a cat form the SPCA. This might sound mundane to many of you... however I am not a known animal lover. When the kids were at home we had our menagerie of cats and dogs, chickens, turkeys, geese and pigs. There were even a hedgehog, snake and iguana thrown in at different stages. I wasn't fond of the mess they made and the constant monitoring of the kids to make sure they cared for the animals appropriately. So when the kids left and the animals slowly died they were not replaced. Many times it was suggested that we get a pet and I was the most adamant at saying 'no'.

Needless to say when I announced that I had a cat the responses from friends that know me included: 'A stray?', 'Whaaa?', 'Are you pet sitting?', 'I am a wee bit surprised', and 'Do you have a mouse problem?'. What actually happened is that my daughter sent me a picture of the cat and I fell in love. What can I say, Tangent is a gorgeous cat. She is a Bengal cat which means that she is intelligent, highly independent and 'talkative'. Not a clingy cat. Actually perfectly suited to me. We chit chat, occasionally have a pet and a purr and are otherwise adjusting to each other. This morning she came to me to get her jaw scratched while she purred her pleasure.

Tangent is a beauty! So sweet of you to take her into your home. I have two rescue cats, Romeo in 2013, and Giulia in 2017.

Sometimes, our bodies just do that for no obvious reasons, I can go up 3 or 4 pounds in one day without explaination, and then suddenly have a big drop. Stay the course and be patient, it will happen. BTW, your cat is beautiful.

Thank you so much for the compliments on my new cat. She is a pleasure. In this time of COVID I appreciate having another living creature in my home besides myself!

Srossca- you have given me pause so I did a little research on how much water is too much. The guideline I saw was based on how much a person weighs. I weigh around 200 pounds. They recommend 100-200 ounces per day for that weight. Including my tea, kombucha and water I am now drinking 160 ounces per day which is in the recommended range. However, I appreciate your cautions and if I weighed less I would need to make some adjustments! Once I am under 170 pounds I will re-look at this aspect.

It can be water weight. Watch out for salt bcoz it holds a lot water into your body.

That's a good size, Romeo at 12 lbs is a heavy lift. Tangent has such pretty markings, I can see why you couldn't resist her! Enjoy!
