Ruhu's Journal, 05 Jan 13

Hubby comes home from FL today & birthday dinner out tonight w/him & boys before they leave tomo. Sad to see them go, but have had a wonderful visit with them. And, feel good about discussions/progress with oldest. He's been struggling academically over the last 2 years. I think I've mentioned that both my boys have epilepsy, but fortunately for both, their seizures are controlled by medication. My eldest had a relapse about 2 years ago which took 5 months to find meds to again stop the seizures. Since then, his grades have plummeted. What we're trying to figure out is why & how to help him again be successful. The high dosage of anti-seizure meds that he'd been on makes him lethargic (as it slows down the brain activity). This could be impacting his schoolwork, so his dr is now trying a reduced dosage since he's been seizure free for almost 2 years. We had him tested & he was diagnosed with ADD, so he's on meds for that & he's working with an academic success counselor now at school. And, he's speaks of high anxiety over school performance, so he's now set up an appt at the counseling office at school too. (Sorry to go on & on, but I obviously need to journal about the struggles.) He's also had noticeable mood swings since he's been home, so I worry about depression too. Anyway, he's starting off again this semester on a good note after several good conversations with me & my hubby. And, we've looked at other options for summer/next year if needed including colleges with special programs for students with ADD or academic struggles, as well as, adult type outward bound type programs to get him back on track.

Other than that, I'm feeling good & will keep on praying, breathing, logging, posting, expressing again for this one day, meal, bite, minute ^ emotion at a time! And, again, I'm so grateful to have you all here to share my struggles, rejoices, laughs, triumphs, etc with -- don't know what I'd do without you! xoxo
