59Carol's Journal, 26 Jun 21

A nice drop of 2 pounds to offset last week's gain of 2.4 pounds. The drag is that last week was the only week where I logged a gain this month. So when the dust clears - this month I lost 2.8 pounds.

Speaking of the big picture stuff. I lost 17.6 pounds this past 6 months. (Last year I lost 3.8 pounds in the same 6 months so I blew that out of the water!!) In general, I averaged 3 pounds down per month so not quite one pound per week. I am pleased to say that I lost every month this past 6 months. Last year I gained in two of the months.

Down to looking at just this past week. Last week I identified my nut intake as the place to make a change and to replace those calories with beans. I did that. I ate 24 g of peanuts per day instead of planning for 56 g (which I often didn't have all of them). My calories decreased this week by just under 40 calories per day.

The result? Instead of gaining 2.4 pounds I lost 2.0 pounds. A range of 4.4 pounds which doesn't seem reasonable when looking at a daily difference of 40 calories. This is what leads me to believe that all calories are not created equal. The more nutritionally packed the calorie and the closer it is to its 'natural' state the more value that calorie has to my body.

I said earlier that I would assess at 5 pound intervals if I need to lose another 5 pounds or not. Although I have 0.8 pounds left in this increment, I can say with confidence that another 5 pounds is in order! I will assess again at 160 pounds.

This week has been filled with batch cooking. I have made vegetable broth, two soups, rice and beans, froze rhubarb and roasted a 'stir fry'. Everything is portioned out and in the freezer. I have been heavily involved with my volunteer work as we had our AGM and now I am formating the policy book and assisting with hiring our director this week. My garden is starting to grow!!

I have and am having an attack of the birds! Crows have been vicicously attacking my windows. I have never had this happen before. Not only is it loud but they are destroying my screens. I looked it up on the internet. It is a thing! Turns out it is mating season and they are agressively defending their territory (did I mention there is an all out war between the crows and magpies occurring as well? More loud squawking). This defense means that they percieve their reflections in the windows as encroaching crows that need to be attacked! So looking for privacy window film to cut down on the reflections. Forced me to go to town in search of some. Don't have enough as only covered one window.

Today I am walking in support of our aboriginal community who have discovered two huge unmarked burial sites of children from the residential schools. Between the two sites 1000 graves have been found. There will be many, many more in the next year to be found. It makes my heart break.

Great job on the consistent weight loss! I need to do some batch cooking this weekend, too. You've inspired me. The bird thing sounds crazy! How long does it last?

Well done on your weight loss and I like your 5-pound increment plan. I've read so much about the aboriginal children and the unmarked graves here in the USA also. This country has done many great things, but we have ignored our ignominious past.

Tim and Shirfleur - The graves were located in British Columbia near Kamloops (215) and south east Saskatchewan (751). This is just so far. As the technology can 'see' under the ground there are going to be more and more found. In my province of Albera we had the most schools in the country. There were 25 schools in Alberta alone and of these 25 there were 15 located in northern Alberta where I live plus 7 church schools (not gov't funded). 9 of these 22 are clustered within a 60 mile radius of where I live. I know many people personally who attended a residential school. The scars are deep and very real. The pain is intergenerational. I have taught many students who have been painfully impacted by the residential school system. My daughter in law has been affected by her family experience with residential schools. My heart aches for what was done to this people. It is wonderful to see them reclaiming their culture. The residential schools are merely a symbol of all that was wrong with how they were treated - there were other legal, political and social ways in which our aboriinal people were treated horrifically. For example our aboriginal population didn't get the right to vote until the mid 1960s. Much systemic discrimination still exists today.

liz-andra- batch cooking is the best! Allows for greater variety on a daily basis especially if you live alone like I do. The bird thing? I don't know how long it will last as this is a new thing -- the windows they are attacking were just installed last year! I woke up this morning to more bird attacks. This morning I hauled a wood pallet over to block that window. I genuinely hope it will end soon.

Shirfleur- the 5 pound increment plan is born of the 'Easy Does It' and 'One Day at a Time' way of life! Or a toe in the water plan.

59Carol I think the birds attacking the windows would drive my dog crazy, not to mention me! I hope the palette works. Love the idea of the 5 pound increments. I am currently set to 15 pound increments, but it's so slow that 5 pounds might be better for me in building a feeling of success.

Wow! What an interesting life you lead. Thank you for sharing in such vivid detail 🙏

LOL! I have a mental image of the toe in the water plan! 💜

Liz Andra- the noise is akin to scaping fingernails on the blackboard. You just want it to stop. The crow's favorite window is still a target. I watched them this morning perching on the pallet and reaching around to peck at the window! I couldn't believe it. It has a privacy screen plus to smallish piecse of plywood leaning against it and a pallet over the whole thing and they still won't stop! Making small goals really builds up confidence. I sometimes wasn't sure if I knew how to lose the weight so small goals helped me see that I could! In my experience, 15 pounds is 4-5 months of work. Keeping a chart of my weight loss allowed me to see the trends and therefore try things to see if they worked.

Jollyfox - I like to keep engaged in the world around me so that often leads to a few adventures. Also these past two years I have been learning to live by myself after 42 years of being married (I am a widow now) so suddenly I need to attend to everything myself. That has been its own kind of adventure.

59Carol, I am grateful to live where there are no crows! I have never heard of this Hitchcockian insanity.

Hahaha, I was thinking of Hitchcock too!

I have never come across this either and I have lived here since 1981! At least the war with the magpies seems to be over. And they still continue. My daughter has suggested a blanket. I haven't rigged that up yet.
