59Carol's Journal, 03 Apr 21

Urghh! Another gain. I gained 1.4 pounds exactly half of what I lost last week. I know that I was following my food plan and that I was consistent throughout the week so I guess this is a course correction from the big drop of last week. Disappointing, for sure. I will put another good week under my belt and see what happens.

The only place that I can see for 'sneaky' calories is that I have been adding a goodly amount of a pickled Vietnamese radish that is pickled in vinegar and oil. I am not accounting for it in my calories. Other than that I can't think of any other place that I am not accounting for the calories. This week I will re-double my efforts to be aware of calories that might be slipping in unnoticed by me.

Yesterday my daughter dropped by with a dog for me. I generally don't have animals at my place - at least not the domestic kind. However, the woodchucks are back. The idea is that Oakley, this large German Shepherd, will make it an inhospitable location for the woodchucks. I told her that I will keep him for one month on probation. My daughter has many animals. When she bought her house the owner left her three dogs. Can you imagine? Two of them were papered fancy dogs and this German Shepherd. Her family has adopted them and added them to her pre-existing 3 dogs and 2 cats. Oakley ended up as the shop dog as he didn't get along with my daughter's German Shepherd. I think she is hoping I will give him a more loving home than the shop. Pretty low bar!

The snow is beginning to melt. No mud yet as the snow is still at least a foot deep but spring is in the air!

Good morning Carol. Your gain is most likely from salt. It will go away. Iam sure you know way better then me . My kids love animals too. I am done with hosting them and having animals in my house. They are a lot of work. Been there done that. Good luck with dog sitting . You are a better person then me. Have a fantastic weekend ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oakley sounds like a great working dog to keep the pests away!

Carol, that gain is most likely just normal body fluctuations, you know it isn't from overeating and it will disappear in no time. You're doing great! 💛 (good luck with the dog, if I had the space I'd have one, great companion).

Thank you for the encouragement. I have taken a close look at my evening salad and discovered that with the variety of different pickles (beets, dill, Vietnamese radish, olives) that I am habitually adding on about 60 calories. I still plan to have some or all of those add-ons but will be tracking them more carefully. Other than that I am at a loss as to where the extra calories are coming from. I am inclined to think that it is natural body fluctuations as it adjusts to weight loss.

Regarding Oakley the dog - he is an affectionate being. He would dearly like to come into the house however I am not willing to have a giant dog in my house. Frankly I am not certain I am willing to have a tiny dog in my house either but definitely not one of his dimensions! He very politely and gently paws my glass doors and looks quite mournful and pathetic. I can see how he was welcome inside my daughter's house! Not mine!

Speaking from experience, just be diligent. I gained a few pounds and couldn't seem to lose it, and Bam! Woke up this morning and it was gone! Just keep adjusting what you eat, but make sure you eat allotted amount of calories. Exercise regularly and it will happen! 💜

Your body could simply be repairing itself. In doing so, it may retain water for a short period of time. Give it a few weeks. Keep up the good work. Log EVERYTHING.

The smell of melting snow in the spring in Alberta... Unforgettable! Slightly earthy from the mud starting to be uncovered... New life! I'm sure your little gain will behave itself and retreat from where it came shortly. I hope you enjoy the fellow sharing your space. Sounds like a nice pup who will greatly enjoy you being outside with him more as the weather warms. Having a job to do is great for a big guy! "farm" dogs get to be what city dogs wish for! 😁

Thank you Kika, Diana and Melissa for your words of encouragement. The weight is moving down - I expect to see a loss come this Saturdays' 'official' weigh-in. I am keeping a real careful eye on the salad add-ons and that seems to be helping.

Unfortunately, I had to return Oakley yesterday. He did a runner down the highway and was brought back by a neighbour and then he went to 'play' on the highway chasing vehicles. I live beside the only highway that goes to the Northwest Territories. This means there are large trucks hauling logs, oil field equipment and many other sundries. I can't have him out there nearly stopping traffic that is going 100 km or more an hour (60-70 mph for the USA members!). It just isn't safe for anyone. It was with sadness that I returned him to my daughter. The woodchucks will likely be out in force again and I will still need to deal with them.

Oh no, what a wild animal Oakley is 😹

I agree the gain is most likely water weight from the sodium in the pickled food!

Too bad about the dog. I want a dog ever so much but won't have one because of all the known problems: too much work, and expense. Living in the city, I would have to walk one, which is a problem for me also. The size of German Shephards is what I like. Sigh. You have been so diligent in your weight loss and have been an inspiration of us all.
