59Carol's Journal, 12 Dec 20

I held my own this week. I bit disheartening because I was down a bit for the past two days. However the other days were up a bit so a totally neutral number is better than logging a gain! I am eating on the low end of my calories so either my calorie counting isn't up to snuff or I am doing the 'starving' thing that keeps you from losing. I am not hungry so I am doubting the 'starving' piece. The plan is to keep on doing as I have been for another week before making any changes in how I eat.

I spent this week with my granddaughter helping her with her schoolwork. All high school students have been moved to online learning since end of November. She stayed with me for 4 days. She is in grade 10 and an excellent student however she managed to get herself behind. I loved teaching and it was a real joy to work with her- she is such a willing student. She worked hard and got lots passed in however not totally caught up. I may be working with her in the next few weeks so we can get her 100% caught up.

I live in Alberta (province of Canada) and the afternoon my granddaughter came to stay with me our province announced they were mostly shutting down in a week to attend to our spiking COVID cases. It goes into effect this Monday. This is going to affect all my interactions with my family and most definitely Christmas.

My two fellows continue to work on my basement. They are tiling now! One bedroom is totally tiled and the store room and hallway are begun. It looks so good. I think the end result is going to be better than I envisioned.

Today I am showing my vintage car to a possible buyer. I hope they buy it. I have a lead on selling my last Harley Davidson motorcycle. That may be finalized by this weekend. Then all that is left is to rent a 2 bedroom main floor of a house to a steady person/family!

Wow! It's really coming along now! Good luck with the vehicles! Hope they sell quick! Hopefully there will be vacinnes out soon! Probably not going to make much difference this Christmas but hoping next year we'll be able to share with our families again. Sounds like you enjoyed the time with your granddaughter! It's those little blessings that keep us going!

What a blessing you are to your grandgirl. My youngest is in grade 11, and he is very behind. He lives for social interaction and is just struggling. My 22 year old nephew from Calgary just asked if he could come for Christmas. We are broken hearted to say it won't work. My husband has serious asthma and we have been so careful. This boy is like my sixth kid, and his mom just passed away in September. I've spent days second guessing and struggling with what to do. For several years he didn't come to stay with us, because it might be his mom's last. Now he just wants to be with us. He will be ok with his dad. I just hate 2020 with all my heart. I'm glad your weight is stable and your remodeling is coming along.it will be so beautiful if it matches the rest of you amazing home! 1m

Thank you Bea and Melissa! Things are coming along. My car sold yesterday with absolutely no haggling! I am so bad at dickering in general. My daughter wants me to come for Christmas breakfast. I am tempted. My bubble is collapsed with her family and my father in law. It is so hard to know and do what is 'right'. I told her I would come for an hour and maybe a bit and then leave. I don't know if it matters if I keep the time shorter. The whole family is finding it hard not to come home to my place and do Christmas like we have done since they were babies. Melissa my heart goes out to you about having to decide about your nephew. I would so badly want to fold him in but you are right, you can't this year. My father in law turns 90 mid March - I am hoping we will be able to gather as a family and celebrate that milestone. Kind of like Christmas....!

I am glad your car sold smoothly. It is so hard to know what to do to protect yourself and the ones you love. My daughter who doesn't live with us is coming over, but she has begun to wear a mask and so do we when in the room with her. My nephew told us five of his buddies have had the virus with no serious illness, but he was afraid to bring it to us. His choices mean he has a wide circle and a lot of potential exposure. I still feel so sad and like Christmas will be difficult for him and so much less joyful for us than it could be. I wish you could have your whole family home like you should be able to do. But next year... That is what we have to keep in mind. We want there to be a healthy next year! I'm not afraid of dying, but I am concerned about serious, long-term problems. We know a young man with terrible heart damage that was the result of the virus. He is just 21. Because he already had the virus, he comes to our home all the time. He is so dear, and it is so desperately sad to know how much he hurts. We only hope and pray he will eventually heal... It has been six months. Anyway, hang in there! This will be over!

Hi Melissa- I am in a bit of a quandary because my daughter's family has a fairly wide circle but no one has gotten ill except for some classmates of my granddaughter that she isn't close friends with. My father in law is very non compliant and it may just be better for his mental health to gather for a little bit. My sister is probably going to stick to the protocols as both her and her partner have wide circles due to their employment. I do feel that we all have to do our part to bend the curve. Leaves me conflicted. That young man with heart damage reminds us that the young are not immune. We will get to the other side!

So great you sold the car!!! I wonder if people couldn't all self quarantine for 2 weeks then get together? But I know some don't take precautions. We have had to be really strict as well even more than most so I feel your pain.

We all have to make difficult choices this year. I'm choosing to stay home for the holidays, there is just too much at stake. I haven't seen my older son in over two years and it breaks my heart, but my hope is that I will see him in the fall if not sooner. Stay safe my friends and make good choices. 🏡🎄💚

Our conversation about how to handle Christmas must be happening all over the world! I will not be making any decision that can't be changed literally on Dec 25 one way or the other. I do appreciate everyone's input. Shirfleur not seeing your son for that long is heartbreaking. I truly hope you get to see him once it is safe. Car is sold and now it is finding a buyer for the 1991 Harley all fully restored. So far a number of interested people cannot due to COVID finances. Preferably I would like to sell it to someone who knew my husband.
