Day 11 Yesterday I really thought a lot about if it was time to break the fast. My sore tummy really was getting to me. i have some Campbells broth around so i had 2 cups of it during the day to see if that helped. and otherwise did more reading & thought a lot about things i could eliminate...and possibly add that might help. i really think my GERD is a complication. I have been taking my proton pump inhibitor daily for the last 4 days as I thought I needed to reduce my stomach acid level due to no food. In hindsight, I had not been experiencing acid reflux before (i find i can control it successfully through diet) so I think I should not have started taking again, further complicating things. my tummy wasn't as sore this morning as yesterday so i've been able to assess a few things as a result as follows:

-tylenol nighttime-ok. thank god. it really does help me get to sleep

-no PPI med today. see if that helps (one possible side effect of it is nausea so that could be a big culprit)
-calcium magnesium zinc a culprit? not going to take today
-regular broth- while technically a no no on the fast, 2 cups of regular broth neither impeded my ketosis or weight loss process. i will still avoid if i can as i don't want to incorporate daily unless i have too. the good thing about it is more enjoyable way to add sodium to my system.

-apple vinegar-up to 3 tablespoons a day, even on fasting is apparently considered to be healthy. i've often read it helps aid weight loss and possible other benefits. vinegar you say? wouldn't that add acid? well interesting thing about apple cider vinegar is it actually turns into an alkili when it hits the stomach!

you see, the point of all this is i believe something is irritating my stomach during this process. now i'm playing investigator. if not for the tummy ache issues this would be a breeze. hunger is not a factor.

i had 2 BM's last night. i had been taking a mild laxative daily before the fast. i had backed off on this thinking i didnt need due to no food. well, i can tell you 11 days in i still need as i still am experiencing let's call it, "colon cleansing". i'm amazed given my lack of food! and it helps my tummy for sure, i don't believe a mild laxative is hurting my tummy at all as it simply keeps things moving. and i do have a bit of gas. i call it "the little burps".

so i would offer this simple thought if i do a long fast again..

-In regards to meds or supplements, don't start doing any med you didn't take regularly before. you may be just adding a complication. in my case i added salt, magnesium, PPI's I wasnt taking before anticipating problems not because I was having problems.

-take small sips of warm water. i am going to start doing this today. i tend to drink my beverages fast. i've read a lot about how small & warm soothes the tummy. yet i hadn't tried yet. just missed that one. and it certainly won't hurt.

-if you intend to do a water only fast then start that way. no coffee, no tea, no broth, no additives. i should have started that way. but no, instead in my OCD way, I started adding and changing a bunch of things in anticipation of the worst! so now in the midst of what already is a drastic event, I complicated the process.

- i would strongly suggest limiting an extended fast (+ 3 days) to a season with nice weather. as many say, being sedentary while fasting can make your body actually feel worse. i have to agree. when i'm moving at work or even taking a walk, being on my feet seems to help my tummy. even just going outside to shovel the driveway for 10 minutes. next time i do one of this length it will be summer, spring or fall only!

tomorrow i'm going to talk about why do a long fast at all and the therapeutic benefits including primarily for me, autophagy.

happy Easter Sunday!
