TIME CAPSULE UNEARTHING DAY! 34 years ago my classmates and I helped put some writing and items into a time capsule during the Bicentennial in 1976. Receiving permission from the superintendant of our school district and with the help of the school grounds maintenance people some of my classmates, neighbors and perhaps the deputy Super and I are going to watch them excavate this time capsule this morning at 9am. I am excited and nervous about it as I am 99.5% sure there is one underground near the flag pole of the school they now call "Futures" lol. I have borrowed a metal detector just in case my investigative work failed me.

We were the home of the Titans at Campos Verdes Jr. H.S. back in the day. I will wear 1970's Hair and outfit in commemoration and bring 2 dozen Maries Donuts (been in area since the 50's) to share at this momentous or not so momentous occassion. I surely hope it isn't one of those disappointing Geraldo Rivera (Al Capone's Vault) events, Yikes! Updated post later.

It is later and I am a bit bummed:
T'was that the time capsule was nowhere to be found as the maintenance with picks, shovels and a small back hoe dug deep into the hard pan soil. Excited when they hit something that was metal and looked like it had a handle but ended up being a rusty old stake of some sort with a strange wire poking out at the top. It wasn't the treasure I was hoping for but it was a memorable day indeed. Friends such as you are my true treasure anyway so I am a rich lady afterall. TOWANDA!!!!!!!!

Friday, Sept. 24 2010, we dug around the flag pole at Campos Verdes along all sides except for the backside until we hit hard pan soil. Unfortunately we didn't find the time capsule.

Dr. Ziggy Robeson the Deputy Superintendent of Twin Rivers said if I get any other good leads they are still open to helping me find the time capsule buried in 1976.

I wanted to use the publicity to reignite hope for the future of the newly formed Twin Rivers School District. I am trying to inspire our neighbors to open their minds to our New Charter Arts H.S. and reinvent our other High-schools so OUR schools are a place parents want to send their children.

Re: the Arts High School, we are in a catch 22 because without enough students we don't get the funding, but without money for funding of the programs we wont get parents/ students who will sign up. The art charter elementary, CCAA is in it's 6th year and is a miraculous place of learning and has experienced remarkable results. It is pure magic. I know you understand how fabulous CCAA is as it is a place where there are idealistic teachers and administration who have hopes and dreams for the children and work very hard to provide an opportunity for growth and learning.

My perception of our neighborhood and it's youth has gone from bad to worse over the past 34 years. The Arts High school was started as a pilot program this year in hopes of being an answer for our children who now attend CCAA, but is possibly doomed. I pray there is a high school in this district where I want to send my daughter to in the year 2013. If not I will be forced to follow in the footsteps of so many other local parents and drive my student out of district if it insures Mary will get the quality education that I want her to have. I have a lot of thinking and work to do to generate awareness and would gladly accept any insight you may share with me. Sincerely yours, a very concerned parent, Lisa

P.S. can you please forward this to the school board and let them know I am ready, willing and able to help.

Exciting! You know... I wonder how many time capsules get forgotten about. I worked at a newspaper and recall they somehow put one in a cornerstone of their building back around 1987. Then they tore down the building recently. I wonder if they just bulldozed it into the ground. lol

That sounds like an interesting experiment Lisa, and it lasted 34 years! I wonder if anything is left.
