tenax661's Journal, 19 Jan 20

A cautionary tale. i got down to 230 about 1 yr ago. 30 lb from my goal. i live alone & pensioner so i find it very hard to eat properly & expensive to buy foods better for me. i just couldnt drop lower than 230 in spite of all my effort and i was miserable. 1 year later at a peak of 282, I now HAVE to lose weight. my right knee is buggered & i'm only 57 so no surgery for yrs there, i have to see the dr for sure but lately i've noticed many of the symptoms of onset type 2 diabetes and somewhere somehow along the way i toppled over the edge into Binge Eating Disorder. so my fight this time will be even more uphill. ironically, i said to my ex that if i had known about my knee and possibly diabetes a year ago, i would have felt i had more to fight for. so this is my first entry of food and journal in a year. I initially set stuff to private but i think i need the pressure of having this out there in public. ive always done better with eternal pressure..or motivation. Happy New Year everyone!

I overbuy my groceries. Not a good habit and it leads to wasted food, so not good environmentally either. I'm lucky that a local grocery store caters to singles or couples so they package smaller servings of fresh veg and fruit, it makes it economical and not a lot of waste. I also got into the habit of freezing single servings of sauces (chili, curries, spg.) into freezer bags of one serving , usually 1 cup servings and it really helps me to eat fresh, non processed food which I can make from a batch. I'll make a pot of wild/brown rice a week, which makes 5 1/2 cup servings. I can be frugal, but I've got to be mindful when I meal plan and shop. The only time I get in trouble is when I pop into the grocery store after work and because I'm hungry, I go and buy chocolates for a fast eat. Good luck, you can do it!!

We are all here for you !! Good luck with starting back up. Orly Girl said lots of great tips I do as well. I am big on going to the least expensive grocery store (can even watch flyers) buying in larger quantities, meal prepping and freezing a lot. I live alone as well so I find it much more helpful than having to cook every meal as a one off. I usually meal prep Sundays so I don’t have to worry throughout the week and make bad choices ! Pinterest is my best friend for all types of recipes or watching healthy YouTube videos.

We are here to support you! I've had a lifetime of disordered eating, ending with Binge Eating Disorder. I had to get professional help because I couldn't seem to get on track with it. Now I can do balanced eating but it's still a daily struggle not to overeat. There are free online resources (such as worksheets) to help you find your way. Just ask the FS Community! Lots of helpful people here! :)

I know how hard it is being older. I am 63 and suffer from RA and recently had a stroke, so very hard to work out, but it WILL come off. Maybe slower than these young ones, but we are older and wiser LOL, also very determined. Don't worry, you got this!

The more fruits and veggies, whole grain plant based you can eat the better! avoid 'crap' foods ( calorie rich and processed) You can get through this!

frozen fruit and vegetables for me cause I am on a tight budget. also I eat almost the same thing every day, just substitute the type of meat or type of veg. it decreases the binging potential

Carnivore diet

Carnivore diet is extremely unhealthy and unnatural. It's a bee line to coronary heart disease. Whole food plant based is the way to go. Look up Dr. Greger.

You can do this! I’m on low fat, no more then 20-25 g of fat per day, I lost 50lbs 7 years ago doing this. Lots of fruits and veggies, you can get them cheaper if you go to the discounted section or wait for sales.

Keep in mind frozen veggies or even canned are a lot better than kd etc that is cheap. Just try to avoid the processed foods. I know it can be expensive so I stock up my pantry and freezer when I see sales and only cheap in season veggies. Stay positive I’m cheering for you!

Way to go! the first steps are often the hardest, but just take one day at a time and soon you'll look back and see the progress you've made. 😊 Frozen fruit and veggies are actually not bad for you at all because often they are harvested from the plant and packaged after they ripen, and freezing does not substantially deteriorate the mineral/vitamin properties in them. (Just a thought in regards to living frugal) Also, I heard this illustration and it helped me a lot, A man once asked, "how do you eat an elephant?" when no one knew the answer he wisely replied, "One bite at a time". Sometimes weight loss is a struggle... sometimes it is so daunting that you look at where you want to be and it seems totally impossible to reach, but the best thing you can do is to just stop, look at where you are today, and take it one lb. at a time... you can do this!

Meal plan and remind yourself that good food heals. We eat to fill but we should eat to fuel. We love eating chick peas, lentils and fresh , canned and frozen veggies. Amazing fibre, protein and cheap living. Fuel your body with oxygen rich foods and the troubles you speak of will disappear- literally. You truly deserve it . We have one trip around the sun. LIVE IT ❤️
