59Carol's Journal, 31 Aug 19

Well I am back to pre-trip weight. Yesterday I was at my lowest and I must say it was tempting to log that weight and not this morning's with its unexplained nearly 2 pound gain! However, I will be true to the process. Saturday morning weight is the one that is logged. Next week I should be able to get to record that loss that was showing yesterday!

This week was all about trying to get vehicles up and running so I can sell them. I have a fellow giving me a hand right now but unfortunately for me he works two weeks in and one week out and I am trying to get the help on his days off. I think if all goes well he will have two cars on the road before he goes back on Wednesday. The other aspect is his daughter is having her first baby any day now so of course that is way more important than my cars. I don't think I have ever hoped a woman gave birth late before!

The most memorable moment this week is the bear encounter. I have a healthy respect for bears as they are strong and fast and capable of taking out a human without a second thought. They also tend not to care about humans in general and will leave you alone if you leave them alone. I have been in this area for 35+ years and have seen many bears from a good distance or from my car. Ten years ago we had a bear come into our yard and paw at our sliding glass doors. When he wouldn't be scared away my husband shot him. Early this week I was weed eating and pruning in the barnyard area. Looked up while stretching my back and noticed a young adult bear approximately 3 car lengths away. I was truly frightened. It was looking through some metal scrap and definitely saw me. I had about 10 car lengths, maybe more, to get to my house. I had to go over very open ground. I walked steadily to the house and hoped the bear wasn't following me as I didn't want to look over my shoulder and draw any more attention to myself. I was safe. The bear left. I haven't seen him since. I hope he doesn't come back as there was no food for him.

Great job on the weight! I'd have logged yesterday, heh :) Good luck with the cars and the bears!

Sounds scary. Bears are so dangerous if you spook them. Glad you stayed calm. Panicking would not have beeb good. Take care and watch out for those bears.

Thank you to all of you! I appreciate that all of you know that bears are scary and not our 'buddies' as seen in many of our cartoons. So far so good on the bear front! The one car on the other hand is having more issues. I will find out more today but what is becoming clear is that it is not going to be a simple fix.

Glad you're safe, that was scary. Have you considered carrying bear spray when you're working outside? My older son lives in Fairbanks and has a cabin in the hills, and I always worry about bears, though he's been there for almost thirty years now. You just never know.

My sister also suggested bear spray. My daughter suggested a dog as she knows I will not have a gun. I haven't ruled the bear spray out however it was the second bear in over 30 years and it doesn't seem to have returned. My sister suggested that I have bear spray stashed in some of the out buildings just in case.

Not a bad idea

I will have to look into where bear spray is available. Maybe it will make me more confident to know it is there. That might be worth it just to have a bit of confidence on this score.

Carol, great report and reflection on what works for you and the changes you are making often weekly. I really like the moving of eating meals to the kitchen. Mindful eating with music and sensation. Also your flexibility and gentle understanding that when we go to restaurants we can not always get what we want— so to be less rigid and enjoy the best you can. Btw should I send you the keto peanut butter cheese cake recipe?

Thank you Alix! Eating in the kitchen has been a real change in habit for me. First of all, it is easier to eat a meal when not trying to prop it up on my knees! Also the idea of eating and not attending to something else makes for a much more enjoyable experience.
