Living With Joy

I needed to release my habit, my tie to the sugary foods. So ceremoniously I took my Marshmallow Peeps to the Ocean. I released them into the waves and stood on the shore watching, waiting and envisioning that they would float away disappearing into the silver lining on the horizon.

Sometimes things don't happen in they way you think they will. The ocean kept throwing those five little peeps back at me as if Mother Nature was saying she would not accept high fructose syrup, sugar and yellow die number 2! I watched the Ocean pull them in and then spit them back to me for a very long time. Slowly the sugar eroded off the 5 yellow peeps but they always came back to me.

I decided I needed to pick them up and eat them. That was a funny thought that crossed my mind but I knew I was ready to really give up my habit of eating empty calories to excess. After 30 minutes of this I tossed those sticky yellow chunks of candy very far into the ocean but to my dismay they still came back. At this point I didn't know what to think.

A Seagull flew in and appeared dangerously close while circling around me and my peeps. There on the Monterey shoreline our eyes locked upon each other, me the seagull and the peeps. Truly I was afraid not for my peeps but for me. He swooped down and just as I thought he was going to grab one of my eroding marshmallow vices he flew away without a second thought. The peeps were not even desireable to a scavanger bird.

The process took longer then I had ever imagined it would. I had a lot of time to think about what it means to choose healthier and to never mindlessly eat sugar. There will be no more sugar comma's for me! I think Mother Nature made the point well that day. In my life offerings wonderful goodies will come into my life. It is my choice as to when I choose to induldge and it is okay to partake in the joy it brings me just as long as it doesn't cause me harm. These types of foods do bring joy to my life and I this is a good part of the reason I was carrying an extra 60 pounds of weight these past years. You see, I can have my cake and eat it too. TOWANDA!!

P.S. You should see the JUMBO Mega Marshmallows my hubby brought home shortly after I arrived home from my little Ocean get away. They must be as big as my fist. Jeez is there hope for me? TOWANDA!!

P.S. I wrote a little more this morning on yesterday's Journal that may be a good tie in to today's posting. :)

Lisa, you've been so Zen about everything - really soul searching during this journey. Kudos to you for that!

You could say I've been making my life Zenteresting. I have really enjoyed the challenge and creativity of the process of taking care of myself. I'm not one to claim any one religion but I do believe in LOVE, and that this planet we live in is in the process of learning how to so why not start by Loving myself and see what possibilites await. Living in the moment, and making the best out of each day is so very good for my heart as it is stronger not only from cardio but from the practice of kindess. TOWANDA !!!!

Lisa, I understand what you mean about the sugar. My real downfall is carbs!! The siren's call is so loud sometimes, that it is the only sound I can hear. Your telling of the ceremonial, symbolic releasing of the sugars in your life, is funny, sweet, and poignant. Wonder what it means when even a scavenger bird won't eat those things???? We had a pool party for the youth group here Saturday, and the dessert (my choice) was s'mores. I love those suckers. What was I thinking?? MMMM, hot, golden marshmallow, melted Hershey's chocolate, all tucked between the wonderful crunchiness of a golden graham cracker. I love s'mores!! But I did not partake. I watched, drooled, licked my chops, but did not give in to the ooey, gooey sweetness that was calling to me. Instead I ate some protein, and walked away. Maybe I have broken the hold that the carb and sugar monsters have on me. Then again, maybe not. Only time will tell. Congrats on your success with the peeps.

Nicely written Peeps story! One of my buddies has a marshmallow habit, and you see what my avatar is. Marshmallows come in these deceptively cute forms but they're the devil!

I love you saying that you believe in Love and that you are stronger from the practice of kindness. :-)

Yes, beautifully written! And a good point to note that seagulls are also considered "air rats" and if THEY won't eat that crap...we certainly shouldn't. HFCS (aka Satan) should be banned from the food supply. Gaining weight is only a part of that equation! Glad you're looking at "food" (really, food-like substances as per Michael Pollan) in a new way with a deeper understanding! We should all have these kinds of events in our lives and take the time to absorb the lessons therein. Have a great one!

Lisa, I'm sorry but I was LMAO about the point where even the ocean said no to the non-food content of peeps. Seriously though, good for you. Although I do have to be glad the bird didn't eat the peeps, I'm not sure if birds can digest those.

Funny you should mention that Sue as I gave it some serious thought about the wild life getting ahold of my peeps. Luckily they just eroded away.......:) No wild life was harmed in my little ceremony. Towanda!!

Thanks for pointing me over :). This is awesome:). Maybe next time throw the peeps off a bridge, lol! So glad to see you having fun with it. You are proving that losing weight doesn't have to be miserable and can actually be fun and rewarding. That's awesome.
