59Carol's Journal, 20 Jul 19

I am back after being gone for 10 days and with only one 'normal' day under my belt before weigh in. When all the dust cleared I am up 1.4 pounds. All things considered not too bad. I do look forwards to being back on my 'normal' eating plan. I anticipate that the weight will drop again and things will go back on track.

I planned as much as was humanly possible to eat well while I was gone however some things were out of my control and I also made some decisions that were definitely high calorie. I do find it a challenge when I am gone. I have the impulse to throw proper eating to the winds and indulge in foods I don't normally eat. Interestingly, I am finding some of those choices less appealing than I once did. My memories of the foods and the actual experience are not lining up. Just as well for future indulgences!

While I was gone I took two courses each two days long to learn basic bookkeeping. I found that I knew some and definitely learned some. I had been concerned that I would find it hard to keep up -- turned out I easily learned the material and tended to be ahead of the class. I am looking forwards to learning more when I take the software course in late September.

I also had car problems. I had a light come on just as I was leaving town. Stopped at the dealership. Light mysteriously went out and hasn't come on since. Not sure what to say about that. Then as I left town my brakes started grinding. Five days later, I took it to the garage and got new front brakes, new rotors, and new ball joints. $1270! Apparently that was a very reasonable price however it was unexpected. The sway bar also needs to be attended to however that is waiting until I can get a friend to do it as it isn't an urgent safety matter.

Between courses I went further south to Calgary to see friends. Unexpectedly, a long time friend of ours was celebrating his 60th birthday and a bunch of long time friends were attending. I 'crashed' the party and surprised everyone. It was so good to see them all. It was also strange because many of these people were friends of my husband's since he was 12-15 years old and then I met them as a 'newcomer' 40 years ago! Spending time with them was bitter sweet as I really felt Dave's absence even as I felt embraced by our friends.

Home is good! I mowed part of the lawn yesterday as it had really grown while I was gone. More to do today on that front. Unfortunately something is up with my sump as the water is black instead of clear ground water and the smell is awful. I will have to wait until it isn't the 'crack of dawn' to contact people who may be able to figure out what I should do.

Yes, once you get back to your regular eating the weight will come off. I too, gained while away at our cabin, and in several days it came off again. On maintenance now, I'm trying a few things that I haven't had for a long time. Some don't taste as good as I expected. Some taste very good, but I'm not sure I should indulge in high carbs if I want to stick to the straight and narrow for my weight, but even more for my concern for my brain. It will be trial and error. Yes, I too, fall away when I am away from home. The mind set seems different, and I have found that to be a problem for years. It must have been gratifying to find that you picked up the new information easily. I am so glad for you. I think of you so often, and my heart is still with you. I still have my 83 year old husband but he has so many health problems. Fear clutched my heart strongly about a week and a half ago or so. I wrote about it on the FS Christian group, but Debbie Cousins and maybe some others prayed and by the next day, I wasn't "living" there. I hope you have a good week. It's a day by day walk, isn't it?

Car problems, while not the worst, sure are PITAs! Glad you're back and were successful. The weight will drop off again in no time. :)

Thank you! Things are moving along. The septic pump was a bigger issue than expected but it appears to be all good now although it was a $500 pump solution. Still have some things to do like return the old one for warranty. Car now is making a horrible sound in the back wheels. I am taking it to my daughter's fellow's shop this morning. May it not be a giant fix. So not out of the woods there yet. I went to a 6 hour (yes it was truly that long) meeting yesterday. They had a bunch of leftovers available to eat. I dug into the the homemade rhubarb crisp - and lost a pound this morning! How crazy is that! Thank you Snowwhite for your continuing concern. It is certainly different not having Dave with me. I miss him. I do continue to embrace my life and enjoy it. At that interminable meeting one of the items was to decide how to honour him with the money donated to our Fair. The decision is that we are building an outdoor community kitchen near where we have camped for years. It should be lovely and it is something he would have embraced. I find the support of my larger community very comforting. It is good to know that others are missing him too.

By the by the car was not a giant fix. Turned out the rear driver's wheel had worked the nuts nearly off. Much further and I may have lost a wheel. Fortunately I didn't and the fix was tightening bolts.

You have an incredible support system. One would say you're lucky, but that doesn't happen through luck, but by investing one's time in the community. It's paying dividends big time. :)

Wow! Glad you got it checked out right away. THAT would have been terrible!

OMG, Carol, that loose wheel . . . glad you got it fixed! Years ago, a coworker was complaining his car didn't steer right, I told him to check the wheel nuts; he ignored me (girls know nothing about cars, right?) and a couple days later, the bolts broke and he had a major, expensive repair to do. I did not say, "I told you so", but I still chuckle about it.

Not a bad gain at all. 😃

Thank you LZenn! My husband and I always believed our friends and family were our 'riches' because when the chips are down people are more important than stuff. We have 'given' over the years and in return we have been generously supported. That wheel could have been such a major disaster and what a relief I dodged that bullet! Last night when I was going to bed I thought what a difference a day makes. The night before my house still smelled from the septic mess and my car was a giant unknown of how bad was the rear end and last night all was taken care of! Gz I do think it is funny that people in general can be dismissed because others are unaware of what their knowledge and skill sets are. I certainly have found that the people around me are somewhat surprised by what I actually do know about the mechanics, septic and other things my husband routinely took care of. What they don't know is how much my husband used me as a sounding board as he problem solved to fix those things. I learned a surprisingly lot via osmosis!

Becca the gain was fairly modest all things considering. At this moment in time I have lost that 1.4 pounds and am working on losing a bit more before my official Saturday weigh in day! Nothing like good routines and habits to fix occasional 'blips' on the weight front.
