I spent the afternoon with an elderly friend whose husband is in the hospital unresponsive. English is not her first language and the doctors called social services on her to charge her with neglect. She's 78 and her husband is 92. They have one son who lives in another state and no family in the area. I am grateful I stayed at the hospital with her and was able to explain her situation so that she wasn't charged with neglect or abuse. Hopefully the state agency will assist her in obtaining in home assistance. It's a shame that our elderly are often forgotten or overlooked and have to lose everything they've worked for to sustain a decent life during their latter years. After taking her home I did an hour walking meditation to de-stress. I am thankful that my husband and I have directives in place for out latter years.
Be well everyone!

Getting old isn't easy, for sure, even when there isn't a language problem. I've spent the past 2 weeks helping friends who are not much older than me, but have been hit by a sudden series of medical problems -- they just found he has cancer of the larynx but was sent home till they get all the test results back and develop a course of action. In taking care of him, she neglected herself and ended up in the hospital with a UTI and dehydration. Fortunately, her son had come to help them for a few days and noticed she was not acting normal, so I stayed with the husband while he took her to the ER. She's better and back home, but their son can't stay much longer. They do have home health care and I try to check in every couple of days (alternating with the health care people -- it's a balancing act between being caring and intrusive
