THIS is what they look like in mass as they emerge from around a tree, shed these out skeletons and climb trees to dry out and prepare to start singing and looking for a mate.

I just imagined those tv shows where you have to have them on you. 😂

Ah yeah like Fear Factor type of show. Yeah that would not be pleasant.

🤢 I hate insects so much! Your beautiful outdoor area covered in bugs. :(

Ridemariel, does brood X reach down into texas or Alabama? You’ve been warm enough foe then to come out I’d think. Be happy this 17 year cicada isn’t seen yet in Alabama. And Kat, agree, noise cancelling head phones worth it the next 6 weeks. DP, it’s not too bad, really, just keep leaf blower ready. 😁

Thx for sharing breco! I can almost hear the deafening roar now. BTW, are cicadas monogamous? 🤔🤣

Is this a common thing in US? 😱😱😱 I find it funny reading your comments and seeing as a normal thing . I guess it is 🤣🤣🤣

Ha, SK! Since their only goal in their 4-6 weeks of life above ground that remains is to have sex and lay eggs - they can’t be choosy. Not sure if it’s a single mating session then die or find as many mates as possible then die. 👍😂

Hey prcrav - cicadas, in genera are common. But this is the year for the 17 year (Brood X) cicadas where billions emerge here in the Midwest to the Atlantic (DC, Virginia) - so it’s unique - an event.

Breco, I wish I could post my pic on here in response to yours. Since I can't...come check it out on my page. We can hear the roar off in the distance but so far I've only encountered them one at a time. I have seen some on our walk on the road dead. Yesterday, I swear one flew by me in our yard. And one solitary live one on our walk was chirping away. In groups they're kinda creepy.😬

Hey Sherry, will check it out. Their buzzing is slowly becoming constant and w each day passing the skies look like it’s become more and more full of these guys.

Br_e_co, thank you so much for the picture! I find it fascinating!! Every 17 years, how random, how FREAKY! Plus, they are scary looking! If one were to land on me I would take off like a race horse and be screaming as if in a nightmare hoping to wake up, yet realizing I had never even fallen asleep.😳☹️ Have a Wonderful Sunday!👍
