atriel2's Journal, 23 Feb 21

I came back yesterday to a slew of messages in my inbox. Rather than going through and answering each one personally I'm just going to put all of the info here.

1. Yes, I'm a WFPB vegan. I was vegan before I really started trying to lose weight and I was 220lbs. So, being vegan isn't a magical weight loss thing.

2. I don't believe in diets. I'd caution you to avoid anything that promises that "you can eat whatever you want without counting calories or tracking and you'll lose weight!"

3. I specifically have an issue with any type of "elimination diet" or anything that requires you to completely cut out a food group to lose weight.

4. Weight loss and fitness are a head game. In other words, it's mostly in your head. If you find yourself going through binge eating and restricting cycles if you can not "keep yourself" from eating, if you are thinking about food 80% of the time, it may be a good idea to talk to a therapist.

5. I don't believe in "clean" eating because it means something different to everyone. To the Keto people, "clean" is no sugar, no refined carbs, etc. to the vegans, "clean" is no animal products. I also know a 75-year-old man who eats shit food all day and he's disgustingly healthy. So take it as you will.

Anyway, life and work are overwhelming. I am still holding steady, I suspect it's the stress keeping me here but I'm also not super upset about it.
I hope you guys are doing well.
xoxo

Losing weight is relatively simple. More calories out than calories in. Every 3500 cals in deficit is worth a pound. Eat fist sized portions 3-5x's a day and 1/2hr to hr of exercise and it will happen. Keeping it off is just maintaining that routine. Welcome back, Atriel!

Yes girl I totally agree with everything you said. I am a vegetarian working towards going full vegan. Your super awesome. Keep going!

@Gallina - that's my feeling about it too. It's when it gets over-complicated that it gets impossible to maintain. Bojanglez - thank you!

I gave up eating dirt around the same time I left my terrible two's. been "clean eating" ever since.

Kat- I went on a 20-minute rant about the myth of clean eating, its roots in systemic racism and how flimsy all of the science is on it. But that means nothing to people that aren't interested in science and facts. Also, I almost choked on my coffee about the "terrible two's". So thank you.

I don't believe in clean eating either, like you said, some keto dieters, vegans and some people who are ultra-serious about fitness and physique use eerily similar language: "clean, strict keto - no CARBage, eat REAL food", "clean, natural vegan diet, eat real food, no carrying around the fat of dead animals in your cells", "clean eating, eat real, whole food, stop poisoning yourself". I HATE the language around it, the demonizing of different foods, and the way people use it to position themselves as morally superior.

I can safely say that all the food I've eaten has been real. It certainly wasn't imagined and it was food.

Great post! Sorry to hear you're still super swamped! Stress definitely effects weightloss. You have the right attitude. Hang in there!

I believe we each have to do what works for us. I often think I could be vegan as I don't really like meat that much...💜😊

LC - I think it's the morally superior part that irritates me. And I say that as a vegan of 6 years and before that, a vegetarian - with brief periods of being an omnivore. I hate food shaming. I'm more of a believer in "addition diets". So add more nutritionally dense things where you can. I'll use dates in my smoothies unless I need to shave some calories and then I'll use an artificial sweetener. But if I use dates, I know that I'm getting trace minerals and vitamins that the artificial sweetener won't give me. Some days, that means more to me than the calories do.

Bearnoggin - <3 Diana - Absolutely! If one can not fit the things that they love into their way of eating, they're never going to see long-term results. And I think that's the key here. It's the long term results. Can I keep going even if it takes a year? Will I be able to maintain this way of living in 5?

I agree with your statements. I was a vegetarian for about ten years. I was very lean at that time but I knew some obese vegetarians. Skipping meat alone will not give the results most people expect...
