lonniehuffman's Journal, 02 Aug 20

I've been enjoying some bird watching while getting my exercise here at Freezeout Lake near Choteau, Montana. It's extra special anytime we get to camp near the water.

Photo Description:

1) Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)

2) A band-winged meadowhawk dragonfly (Sympetrum semicinctum) is enjoying the view of Freezeout Lake from its perch.

3) Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) have taken over this small island.

4) I've learned that Freezeout Lake is protected for the more than 200 species of birds that use the lake as a stopover on their migratory routes.

5) Birds of a feather may flock together, but here are several different species of birds sharing the same space in the lake.

6) American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)

7) Spiny-leaf sowthistle (Sonchus asper) is related to dandelions. The leaves are edible.

8) Canadian Geese (Branta canadensis)

9) We enjoyed a lovely sunset last evening.

How do you know what all these things are? I see stuff all the time but rarely know what I'm looking at unless very common. Do tell. Lol

I look them up online, DP. I use the Googe Photos app to find some of them, or I do a Google search. I'm trying to teach myself about the things I see on my travels. 🙂

Oh, Lonnie! You've outdone yourself again. I LOVE your photos and always look for them.❣ The descriptions are much appreciated too. #5 made me smile. #6 reminded me that; "A strange, strange bird is the pelican. It's beak holds more than it's belly can!." I can't remember the rest but it's a diet related poem 😁. Happy Trails!!!

How do you survive mosquitoes? Are you immune to their nastiness or do you have a way to keep them away from you?

Great question, Joelmel. I'm definitely not immune to mosquitos. In fact, I hate them. When they're real bad, it's hard to completely avoid them. Here they're not too bad. I've definitely seen worse. I have several ways I fight them. I'll wear sweat pants and a long sleeve t-shirt so that most of me is covered. I have an electric bug zapper that looks like a tennis racket that really helps. We've also found a great deet-free insect repellent that doesn't smell too horrible and it works great. It's called Repel, and it's made with lemon and eucalyptus. When the mosquitos are really, really bad, I'll just stay in the camper as much as possible. That's not happened too often, thankfully.

Sorry, still getting the hang of it. I was saying on someone’s else post accidentally, that your pictures are so beautiful, that you could work for National Geographic magazine😊

Wow! Thank you, Roni333! That's an incredible compliment! I'm so flattered! I haven't taken any pictures for NatGeo yet, but one of my pictures did make it onto Discover Magazine's website, which made me quite proud. If you'd like to see it, I posted details about it here. http://www.lonniehuffman.com/discovermag.html

Lonnie, I looked up the pelican poem because I was going nuts trying to remember it.🤯🤔 Enjoy! "A wonderful bird is the pelican, His bill will hold more than his belican, He can take in his beak. Enough food for a week. But I'm damned if I see how the helican!"
